The Juventus legend had plied his trade for Delhi Dynamos in the inaugural season of the league.
Arguably one of the best players to have ever graced the football pitch, Alessandro Del Piero is a global superstar in the truest sense. The former Italy and Juventus great, however, shares a special connection with India courtesy his stint as Delhi Dynamos FC's marquee player for the inaugural Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) season back in 2014, which also happened to be his last as a professional footballer. It has been a good five years since Del Piero last played in the country, but it seems that India and the Hero ISL are still very much on his mind.
Currently working as a television expert, Del Piero interacted with a select Indian media group at the sidelines of the Laureus World Sports Awards held in Monaco earlier this week. During the interaction, the 44-year-old informed that he still follows the Hero ISL and is delighted with the way the tournament is progressing.
"I have been to India couple of times for different reasons after my Hero ISL stint. I am following what is happening in the league. I had a great time there, short time, just three months but happy that the league has grown, it is six months now. I quite like how things are moving," he was quoted as saying.
Asked if he would like to come back to India as a coach, Del Piero stated, "Not at the moment. I see the game in a different way now, working with the tv. Thanks to my experiences in India and Australia my knowledge is growing."
During the event, he was also enquired about what he thought about the correlation between the rate of growth of the Hero ISL and the progress of Indian national football team, to which he responded, "One thing is how you grow the league and another is how national team grows. It is not easy to balance."
