The Blues uploaded a video on their Twitter, drawing similarities between Messi's and Lampard's wonder goals.

Lionel Messi dazzled and astounded the world of football yet again last weekend with another spectacular hattrick against Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin.

His first was a thunderous freekick that found its way straight to the top left corner. His second goal was the finish on an exquisite piece of play from Barcelona that Betis manager Quique Setien later described as ‘a playstation move’.

His third however, his third goal was something right out of the planet. Without taking a first touch and without looking at the goal, Messi sliced his brilliant left foot through Rakitic’s cushioned past and generated enough spin to take it past a 6 feet 2 Pau Lopez who was close to his goal line and enough precision so that it hit just the underside of the crossbar and went in. Betis defenders and Barcelona players had their hands on their heads, the Estadio Benito Villamarin stood up to its feet applauding the genius they had just witnessed and made the ‘we are not worthy’ gestures for the remaining five minutes of the game.

The clip of the goal went viral on social media and amidst the furore, loyal Chelsea supporters were quick to point out that it bore a strong resemblance to a similar goal scored by Frank Lampard.

And the official Chelsea FC twitter accounted added momentum to the story by unearthing a footage of club legend Lampard scoring a similar worldie with the caption ‘Before Lionel Messi, there was Frank Lampard!’

In the 2008 season of the Premier League and against Hull City, the ball fell to Lampard’s feet. Frank took a slice at it with his weaker foot and chipped it sublimely over Hull City goalkeeper Boaz Myhill with swerve and panache.

His manager Luis Felipe Scolari was enthusiastic about the strike at the time.

'I think Frank Lampard's goal was one of the best in the Premier League,' he said, as reported by the BBC.

'It was a fantastic goal - only Frank Lampard can make this goal. It was one of the best goals I have seen in my life.
