Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville is also tipped by many to become the Director of Football at Old Trafford.
After appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the interim manager, Manchester United are now in search for a new director of football in their bid to restructure the management setup. It is believed that the appointment of their first-ever director of football might bring about stability in the club which is supposed to have lost since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.
United are yet to find a perfect replacement for the legendary Sir Alex, who departed back in 2013. Since then, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho have all had their stints with the club but together could only manage to bring in the FA Cup, EFL Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
Naturally, it will be a tough task for any manager to carry on with the legacy left by Ferguson and hence the need for a director of football is sensed. There are several big names in contention for the job including former Red Devils legends Eric Cantona and Edwin van der Sar, currently the director of Ajax Amsterdam, while Paul Mitchell, the director of Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, also emerges as an option.
Recently, former fan favourite at Old Trafford, Peter Schmeichel is reported to have expressed his willingness to take up the job of becoming the director at his former club.
“Of course you’d be interested, because it’s a massive job, but also you’ve to sit back a little bit and agree with yourself and make sure you have the pedigree or capability of doing it,” Schmeichel told beIN SPORTS.
“If the club really wanted me to do that, I’d be interested of course,” he said.
Schmeichel might be a good option for the director of United considering that the 55 year-old is quite familiar with the club. However, his lack of prior experience in that field will also be taken into consideration, leaving the competition for the position wide open.
