It is nothing new that Jordan Pickford with his quality has helped Everton again– Marco Silva

The 24-year-old custodian stood up from his blunder at Anfield to make a brilliant late save against the Magpies.

The Merseyside derby at Anfield which took place few days ago ended with a freak goal scored by Divock Origi to hand over a late late 1-0 win for Liverpool over helpless Everton. The Toffees’ shot stopper Jordan Pickford, turned in an outgoing miskick by Virgil van Dijk only for the Belgian forward to head it home in the 96th minute.

However, just a couple of days later, when Marco Silva’s side faced Newcastle United at the Goodison Park, Pickford stood up from his horrendous mistake in the last game to make an outstanding save late in the game, to ensure the spoils were shared by both teams. The hosts were trailing in the 19th minute when the Magpies’ Salomon Rondon scored his third goal of the season to give his side the lead. Nevertheless, the Toffees’ Brazilian talisman Richarlison pulled one back for his side with a few minutes to go for the half time.

But what came as a highlight of the intense game in the 90th minute, was the brilliant effort made by Pickford to deny Christian Atsu. The Ghanaian midfielder almost found a winner for Rafael Benitez’s side with a through ball from Ayoze Perez but the young Englishman dived low to his left to parry his shot away. Talking about the incident, the Toffees’ boss Silva said, “It is a normal situation for him, with his quality. I didn't see anything different from the previous game at home. It is normal with his quality and he helped the team again. It's nothing new.”

Everton should certainly have won the game after having 18 attempts overall, but unfortunately they could manage to get only three of them on goal which were eventually either saved or blocked by their opponents. Skipper Gylfi Sigurdsson and Cenk Tosun, in particular, came closest to scoring but both were denied by a strong Magpies defence.

Silva spoke about the chances his side got in the game saying, “Cenk had a fantastic chance. If he scored, the game would be different.” He also talked about Newcastle approach to the game saying, “They came here with one thing in mind - to keep a strong defensive organisation with nine or 10 players behind the ball and they achieved what they wanted.”

“First half we were better, second half not so well. The goal we conceded we reacted well to but in the second half we were more slow and a little bit more anxious. We didn't create enough chances in the second half to change the result,” added the former Hull City and Watford manager.

Everton will face Silva’s former club Watford on 10th December at the Goodison Park in the Premier League as they look to close down the gap between fifth placed Arsenal.
