I like to see him in the final third and creating things- Darren Fletcher on Paul Pogba

Pogba will be in a spotlight for The Red Devils as he returns to face The Old Lady in the Champions League.

Paul Pogba has been a subject to a lot of controversies in the past. His off-the-pitch behaviour has brought him a lot of problems. However, when former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher spoke to Sky Sports, it is understood that Pogba created problems while on the pitch too.

According to Fletcher, the French international was not disciplined enough to play as a central midfielder while he was a teenager at United.

Pogba, who was a part of the Red Devils reserves, left on a free transfer to Juventus in 2012. The then 19-year-old parted ways with the club due to lack of opportunity under Sir Alex Ferguson. However, he excelled during his time with the Serie A giants scoring 28 goals in his 124 appearances in all competitions. Ever since, he has also capped for the national team 64 times and scored 10 goals in the process. He was one of the best emerging players in Europe and was on the radar of various big clubs.

Nonetheless, Pogba returned to Old Trafford in 2016 for a fee of around £90 million.

Fletcher, on the other hand, revealed how the Frenchman, during his first stint with United, wasn’t seen as a good option in the central midfield due to his lack of disciplinary actions. It appears from his comments that Pogba was rather a good option as a forward.

“The first time I spent out with my illness I did a coaching spell with the reserve team when it included Pogba, [Jesse] Lingard , [Ravel] Morrison and we played him higher up the pitch in attacking areas,” said the current Stoke City midfielder.

“We felt like he was the one who would win us game, coupled with the fact that he was ill-disciplined in the middle of the park,” he added.

“It goes back to a famous game when we felt like he left off the back of against Blackburn.”

“Paul was on the bench and the boss picked up Park Ji-Sung and Phil Jones in the midfield. We didn’t think he was disciplined enough for the reserve team, never mind the first team at that time.”

Although, Fletcher did admit that Pogba can do a lot better as a forward and it would be good to see him more in the advanced role where he can bring in all his creativity. “I like to see him in the final third and creating things.”

“He played for Juventus [on the left] and I spoke before about his connection with [Anthony] Martial. Pogba can easily drift out wide. He can also get in the box, he’s a big lad. I’d love to see him with a bit more freedom to express himself.”

Pogba will return to the Allianz Stadium for the first time since signing for United as the Red Devils visit Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.
