Report: India in bid to host upcoming edition of Supercopa de Espana
Saudi Arabia and the USA are also in the running to stage a revamped version of the competition in January next year.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Marca, India has made a bid to host a new format of Supercopa de Espana
The report claims that Saudi Arabia, the USA along with India are the frontrunners to host the elite competition. The report also stated that the tournament will have four teams competing ie Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid and Valencia CF.
The RFEF, in February, decided to play a revised version of the Supercopa, where four teams will now be eligible to qualify. The tournament will feature both finalists from the 2018-19 Copa del Rey and the remaining highest-ranked teams from the 2018-19 La Liga season, that had not already qualified through the cup final.
Earlier, this season, for the very first time, the Supercopa de Espana was played outside Spain, in Morocco. This campaign, the competition will be played from 8th - 12th January.
If it comes to fruition, this will be the first time that any official European club competition will be played in the country and fans could see players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard, Antoine Griezmann, Sergio Ramos among others live in action.
India has already hosted some big tournament like the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, In the year 2018, Kerala Blasters staged a pre-season tournament involving Girona FC of Spain along with Melbourne City FC from Australia. Next year, the country is also set to to host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
[KH_RELATED_NEWS title="Related News"][/KH_RELATED_NEWS]The advent of the Indian Super League and few of the top players playing in the league has created a new market for some of the big football clubs from Europe to come to Indian shores. Players like Robert Pires, Alessandro Del Piero, Roberto Carlos, Dimitar Berbatov, John Arne Riise and recently Tim Cahill have plied their trade in India.
These football clubs would love to generate a new fan-following in the cricket-crazy nation, and what better way to do that than by enabling fans to watch their idols play in their country.
