It was a contrasting couple of days for English sides as both Manchester City and Liverpool registered resounding wins but the other pair fell short.

Europe’s premier club competition resumed its action following the international break, on Tuesday, much to the delight of supporters of the sport all over the world. The group tables have now begun to take shape but with a while to go in the group stages, the race for a knockout spot remains as open as ever.

Manchester United are no longer a European superpower

There was once a time when European nights at Old Trafford were a spectacle to behold with some of football’s greatest sides gracing the hallowed turf. However, as Tuesday’s performance showed, the current Manchester United side lacks the flair, the bravado and the quality of those legendary sides.

The men in red were played off the pitch by Juventus in the first half and have their mercurial goalkeeper, David De Gea to thank for ensuring that they did not lose by a greater margin.

Favourable results allow Manchester City to climb the table

Following their loss to Lyon in the opening gameweek of the Champions League season, Manchester City have managed convincing away wins over Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk while the other teams in the group have dropped points, with their closest competitors, Lyon having drawn both of their last two games.

Ajax and Bayern will battle it out for top spot:

One of the surprise packages of the Group stages, Ajax lie level on points with German giants, Bayern Munich after three games played. The Munich club drew to Ajax in Germany and will be looking to the fixture in Amsterdam as an opportunity to take a lead in the group.

PSG falter yet again

Paris Saint Germain came into the competition as one of the frim favourites to be lifting the coveted trophy at the end of the season. However, they fell to immediate defeat at the hands of a rampant Liverpool side. The Paris side dropped further points against Napoli as they depended on a late Angel Di Maria equalizer to save them from defeat.

 PSG now lies third in the table with work to be done to secure a knockout spot.

Borussia Dortmund could be the dark horses of the tournament

The resurgent German side lies three points clear on top of what looked a very daunting Group A, following their rout of Atletico Madrid who have played in two of the last five Champions League finals. With eight goals scored and none conceded in three games, Marco Reus and company could be looking at a very respectable UCL run ahead of them.
