The Golden Eagles dropped two important points in the title race with league leader Sporting Clube de Goa.
Dempo Sports Club and Guardian Angel Sports Club played a goalless draw in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
With this draw, Dempo has 38 points from 17 matches, while Angels concluded their season with 34 points from 22 matches.
Angels coach Riston Rodrigues made four changes in the starting XI bringing in Raunak Gajendra, Mizio Peixoto, Nicholas Rodrigues and Perryson Rebello following a defeat against Panjim Footballers in the last match, whereas Dempo gaffer Samir Naik chose to go with the winning formula which earned him all three points in the last match against Corps of Signals.
Dempo were unlucky not to open their account in the 10th minutes when Nickson Castanha sent a curling cross from deep right flank to Yogesh Kadam at the far post but his header was denied by the woodwork.
Dempo completely dominated next 20 minutes with continues attacks but aimless shooting from Latesh Mandrekar, Nestor Dias and Kapil Hoble restricted the scoreline for the Golden Eagles.
Dempo had another great opportunity in the early second half when Yogesh found Beevan D’Mello with a low cross in the goalmouth but the striker failed to convert it with just Angels keeper ram Sroop at the stake.
Angels created their first potent chance of the match in the 66th minutes when Ghanaian striker Abel Hammond sent a long cross to Perryson at the far post but the winger shot wide from close, a few minutes later, Abel once again found Perryson who headed back to substitute Nigerian forward Yakubu Mohammed whose shot went just over.
In the closing stage of the match, Angels keeper Ram came with a great save when he brilliantly blocked Olan Chandran’s powerful strike from close to rescue his side, while a rebound of the same was shot out by Nestor Dias from 6-yards.
The dying minutes saw an end-to-end football where Angels had two great chances but first Perryson’s shot off Aslon Oliveira’s pass rebound off the crossbar, while in the last minute Yakubu’s sparkling shot from the top of the box went just over the crossbar.
In the other match of the day played under the floodlights at the same stadium, Sporting Clube de Goa registered a narrow 1-0 win over Vasco Sports Club to make stronger hold at the top of the league. After a goalless first-half where Vasco were the dominant side, the all-important goal was scored by Marcus Mascarenhas in the 72 minutes to rescue all three points from the match.
