The FIH men’s hockey World Cup 2023 is set to begin on 13 January in Odisha. All 16 teams have arrived in Odisha and are gearing up for the mega event. Hosts India is set to take on Spain (Redsticks) in the opening encounter at the newly constructed Birsa Munda international stadium in Rourkela, Odisha. The 16 teams are divided into four pools with each pool consisting of four teams. India, Spain, Wales, and Great Britain make up Group D and Wales will be making their debut at the FIH men's World Cup.
The Men in Blue and the Redsticks have met each other four times in 2022 with Spain having a slight edge in winning two matches with India winning one at the men’s pro league. The Spanish team recently visited India at the 2022-2023 men’s pro league and had a decent outing. The Spanish side won the opening encounter at the Kalinga stadium against India and in the reverse fixture lost in the shoot-off after the match ended in a draw.
In the overall h2h, India has a slight edge defeating the Redsticks 28 times with Spain not far behind with 25 wins. The biggest win for India against the Redsticks came at the 2019 test series held in Antwerp, Netherlands (6-1). On the contrary, Spain's biggest win against The Blues was way back in 2009 (8-2). The Men in Blue failed to qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the first time and the team was going through a bad phase in the 2000s.
