Here is the full calendar of events for Indian Wrestling in 2022

The year has a lot of exciting events in store for the grapplers.

Wrestling is one of the sports which has a very passionate fan-following across India. The fans of wrestling follow their athletes religiously and observe their performances across multiple tournaments. It’s one of India’s major sources of medals at prestigious multi-sport meets. The year 2021 was a major one for Indian wrestling, which finally saw some normalcy amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indian wrestlers took part in several competitions during the past year. However, the main focus was the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021 after a year-long postponement. Indian wrestlers have done really well in the Olympic Games historically. They have been delivering medals in every edition since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2021, Indian wrestlers Ravi Dahiya and Bajrang Punia made headlines by winning Olympic silver and bronze respectively.

There are many notable events in line during 2022 for the Indian wrestlers. They will hope to take inspiration from last year and continue to impress at all major events. Here is what the year has in store for Indian wrestling:

April

Senior Asian Wrestling Championships 2022 (19 April to 24 April):

Indian wrestlers will compete with the rest of Asia at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships. The previous edition in 2021 was important in the run up to the Tokyo Olympics. India finished third in the medals tally with five golds, three silvers and six bronze medals. The contingent will hope to deliver better performances this time.

July

Cadet World Wrestling Championship 2022 (25 July to 31 July):

The budding wrestling stars between the ages of 15-17 participate in the Cadet World Wrestling Championships. This tournament is vital for the development of young wrestlers. The previous edition saw India finish with 13 medals (five golds, one silver, seven bronze) and the aim will be to improve upon it.

Commonwealth Games 2022 (28 July to 8 August):

One of the major events of the year 2022 are the Commonwealth Games. The multi-sport event will take place in the city of Birmingham. Indian wrestlers delivered five golds, three silvers and four bronze medals at the 2018 edition. There is scope for improvement and each athlete will hope to contribute towards India’s overall tally.

August

Junior World Wrestling Championships (15 August to 21 August):

Indian wrestlers will fly to Sofia, Bulgaria for the Junior World Wrestling Championships in 2022. The previous edition was positive for India, where the athletes won four silver medals and seven bronze medals. Players in the age category of 18-20 are eligible to participate in the tournament.

Senior World Wrestling Championships (10 September to 18 September):

The finest Indian wrestlers will fly to the Serbian city of Belgrade to take part in the Senior World Wrestling Championships 2022. Freestyle and Greco-Roman categories will see all major names in the world of wrestling collide against one other. Indian athletes won a silver and a bronze in 2021 and the objective will be to collect more medals this year.

19th Asian Games (10 September to 25 September):

The second major multi-sport event of the year will be the 19th Asian Games. The 2022 edition will take place in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat were the two gold medalists at the 2018 edition and they will be leading the contingent to score more medals in 2022.
