Neeraj Chopra creates history, wins India’s first ever athletics gold medal in Olympics

ICYMI: Bajrang Punia clinches bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics

Here's when we spoke to Neeraj Chopra in 2020, speaking about his Tokyo 2020 aspirations, aim and more.

It was a historic day for the Indian contingent to conclude their Tokyo Olympics campaign. Neeraj Chopra won a historic first-ever athletics gold medal for India in the men's javelin throw event. On the other hand, wrestler Bajrang Punia extended the medal tally by claiming bronze in the men's 65kg freestyle category. However, Aditi Ashok missed out on a podium place by a whisker.

Overall, it has been the most successful campaign in Olympic Games for India, having won total of 7 medals (1 gold, 2 silver & 4 bronze).

😭 😭 Courtesy of Neeraj Chopra's gold medal winning campaign at the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian national anthem will be heard for the first time at the Summer Games since 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Neeraj Chopra on his achievement.

"History has been scripted at Tokyo! What @Neeraj_chopra1 has achieved today will be remembered forever. The young Neeraj has done exceptionally well. He played with remarkable passion and showed unparalleled grit. Congratulations to him for winning the Gold" said Modi on twitter.

As it stands India is 47th in the medal tally.

This is India's highest ever medal tally at one edition of the Olympics. It eclipses the six we won at London 2012. Proud and heartiest congratulations to the Indian contingent.

Neeraj Chopra is sandwiched in between the Czechs. Jakub Vadlejch and Vitezslav Vesely finishes second and third. Amazing pictures!
