Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Major events to watch in last week of May
The second tennis major of the season, French Open, gets underway this week.
A lot of sporting events are lined up for the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. The second grand slam of the year, the French Open will be the major event of the week with two Indian men's doubles pairs making the entry into the main draw. The badminton action from Malaysia will move east to Thailand with all the top shuttlers taking part in the event (part of the Olympic qualification cycle).
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (May 28-04 June) in the Indian sports calendar.
Tennis
May 28-11 June: French Open
Men's Doubles
Rohan Bopanna/Mathhew Ebden and Yuki Bhambri/Saketh Myneni
Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan/Sriram Balaji are fourth in the alternates list
Two Indian doubles pairs are set to be in action at the French Open main draw. Jeevan and Balaji are currently in the fourth spot (alternate list) and have a chance to move into the main draw provided a few withdraw from the event or doubles section.
Yuvan Nandal will spearhead the Indian contingent in the junior boys section whereas Aryan Shah will look to progress to the main draw through the qualifying series.
Taekwondo
May 29-04 June: World Taekwondo Championships
Men - Aman Kumar (Under 54kg), Niram Chaudhar (Under 58kg), Ajay Kumar (Under 63kg), Prithvi Raj Chouhan (Under 68kg), Shivam Tyagi (Under 74kg), Rishabh Chaudhar (Under 80kg), Gulshan Sharma (Under 87kg), Preetham Raghu (Over 87kg).
Women - Twisha Kakadiya (Under 46kg), Deeksha (Under 49kg), Latika Bhandari (Under 53kg), Sonam (Under 57kg), Sonia Khan (Under 62kg), Margerette Regi (Under 67kg), Etisha Das (Under 73kg), and Rodali Barua (Over 73kg)
Athletics
June 04-07: Asian U-20 Athletic Championships
Badminton
May 30-04 June: Thailand Open (BWF 500)
After a successful outing last week at the Malaysia Masters, the action now shifts towards East Asia in Thailand. HS Prannoy won his first BWF Tour title and will look to continue the same going forward.
Wrestling
June 01-04: Bishek Ranking Series
This is the third-ranking series of the season and is of great importance as the points gathered here will be helpful in deciding the seedings for World Championships in September. Ravi Kumar Dahiya is set to return after a long gap due to an injury.
Surfing
May 30-07 June: World Surfing League
India will be making its debut at the World Surfing League set to be held in EL Salvador. Four Indian surfers Ajeesh Ali, Ram Budhial, Sivaraj Babu, and Sanjay Selvamani are part of the squad.
Hockey
June 2-3: FIH Men's Pro League
02 June - India vs Belgium
03 June - India vs Great Britain
After two back-to-back losses, the Indian men's hockey team will look to bounce back strong in the second leg of the England tour. The two losses also pushed India to the second spot behind England.
