Athletes to win Laureus Sportsman of the year award on multiple occasions

Roger Federer has won the award a record five times.

An ceremony that takes place annually, the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year recognizes the accomplishments of individuals in the world of sports. One of the seven constituent awards given during the Laureus World Sports Awards, it was given for the first time in 2000.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, a global organisation that supports 500,000 young people via more than 150 charitable projects, presents the awards. Let’s have a look at the athletes who have won the Laureus World Sports Awards.

7. Tiger Woods (2000, 2001)

Tiger Woods was the youngest player to complete the career Grand Slam when he received the trophy for the first time in 2000 after winning three consecutive major championships. In 2001, he again received the honour.

6. Michael Schumacher (2002, 2004)

In his career, Michael Schumacher has twice taken home the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year honour. He first received the honour in 2002 after winning his fifth Formula One Championship, and he did so again in 2004 after winning his seventh.

5. Rafael Nadal (2011, 2021)

Rafael Nadal has twice bagged the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year honour. After winning three Grand Slam championships and finishing the year as the No. 1 player in the world, he was the first recipient of the award in 2011. He received the honour once more in 2021 when he equaled Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam victories and won a record-extending 13th French Open victory.

4. Lionel Messi (2020, 2023)

Lionel Messi has won the Laureus World Sportsman award of the year twice in his career. Lionel Messi was the highlight of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, establishing himself as the greatest player of his generation and possibly all time as he led Argentina to a thrilling triumph.

Messi, 35, not only scored seven goals, including two in the famous final match against France, but he also served as the catalyst for his team's performance throughout the competition, helping them win their first World Cup in what is probably their last chance. When he eventually won the one prize that had escaped him, he was hailed as the player of the competition and given the Golden Ball.

3. Usain Bolt (2009, 2010, 2013, 2017)

Usain Bolt has been named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year four times in his career. He initially received the honour in 2009 after breaking the world record in the 100 and 200-meter races at the World Championships in Berlin. After winning several sprint events gold medals at the Olympics and World Championships, he went on to win the prize in 2010 and three more times in 2013 and 2017.

2. Novak Djokovic (2012, 2015, 2016, 2019)

Four times throughout his career, Novak Djokovic has been named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. As a result of his three Grand Slam victories and year-ending position as the top player in the world, he first earned the award in 2012. After capturing numerous Grand Slam championships each year and finishing as the world's top player, he went on to win the prize again in 2015, 2016, and 2019.

1. Roger Federer (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2018)

The most of any athlete is Roger Federer, who has received the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award five times in his career. He initially won the accolade in 2005 after winning three Grand Slam competitions, and he did so again in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2018 after finishing each year's competitions as the world's top player and winning multiple Grand Slam competitions.
