Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Events to watch in last week of August
Asia Cup and US Open are the two major events to look forward to this week.
A lot of sporting events are lined up in the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. The last Grand Slam of the year — US Open 2023 — is set to kickstart this week with two Indians already making it to the main draw in men’s doubles. The much-awaited Asia Cup 2023, a pre-cursor tournament to the ODI World Cup, is scheduled to be held across two nations and top six Asian teams are set to take part.
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (August 28-03 September) in the Indian sports calendar.
Athletics
The athletics action after the completion of World Championships shifts to Diamond League. World Champion Neeraj Chopra and Murali Sreeshankar set to be in action at the Munich Diamond League. A day later, NR holder Praveen Chitravel and Abdulla Aboobacker will compete at Xiamen Diamond League.

Basketball
After entering the final of U-17 Asian Championships last year, India booked a place in the U-18 World Cup. The tournament is set to feature 20 teams divided into four groups. Indian men’s team is stationed in pool D alongside Latvia, Kyrgyztan, Ukraine and Israel.

Cricket
Asia’s premier cricket tournament, Asia Cup is set to take place across two countries – Pakistan and Sri Lanka for two weeks. This will help teams prepare for the ODI World Cup which is just a month away scheduled to be held in India. Six countries to participate are – Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, and Afghanistan.

Football
The 132nd edition of Asia’s oldest football tournament, Durand Cup, has reached the knockouts after the successful completion of group stages. Top teams from each of the six groups followed by two best second placed team progressed through to the quarter-finals.

Table Tennis
After a two-week break, the WTT Contender series is back to Asia post the South American leg. All the top Indian players will give the tournament a miss as they are scheduled to take part in Table Tennis Asian Championships. In their absence youngsters Payas Jain and Archana Kamath are set to spearhead the Indian contingent.

Tennis
The last grand slam of the year US Open is scheduled to be held for two weeks at the Flushing Meadows. Two Indians in the men’s doubles contingent have entered directly into the main draw with a rest few in the alternates list.

Men’s Doubles: Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden and Yuki Bhambri/Demoliner
Volleyball
After the successful completion of the men’s edition in Iran, the women’s edition is scheduled to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. The 22nd edition of the tournament features 14 countries and India is placed alongside Iran and Japan in Group B.
