Neeraj Chopra won gold medal Tokyo Olympics and finished as runner-up in Paris.

Two-time Olympic medallist, Worlds and Asian champion, Neeraj Chopra, has been the poster boy of Indian sports since scripting history with an 87.58m throw at the Tokyo Olympics 2021, which made him the first Indian to clinch Gold in athletics and first since independence to win a medal in the sport. Since then, Chopra has elevated himself to newer heights at almost every competition.

An Olympic silver followed three years later in Paris and in 2025 Chopra reached the pinnacle by clearing the 90m mark—a distance that had been eluding him since his senior debut in 2014. As one of the few athletes to hold the trio title of Olympic, world and Asiad Gold medals at once, Chopra has written-rewritten history and shattered records at almost every event he competed in.

Does Neeraj Chopra hold any Olympic record in men’s javelin throw?

No, Chopra does not hold any Olympic record in the men’s javelin throw event. His best throw at the Olympic Games is 89.45m, which he achieved in the finals at Paris Olympics 2024. In the qualification round, he had registered a throw of 89.34m in his first attempt to secure the top spot.

Chopra won gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a best throw of 87.58m. Three years later he returned with a silver medal finish with a best attempt 89.45m from Paris 2024. At Paris Olympics, Chopra conceded the top spot to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who threw 92.27m on his second attempt to bag the gold medal.

Arshad’s 92.27m throw is the current Olympic record, which he set at the Paris Olympics 2024, surpassing the previous record of 90.57m held by Norway’s Andreas Thorkildsen. Nadeem broke the 16-year-old record last year to become the first Asian athlete to hold an Olympic record in the javelin throw.

When will Neeraj Chopra be in action next?

In his last competition, Neeraj Chopra won the Paris Diamond League with a best attempt of 88.16m. Chopra, who had in his previous DL participation cleared the 90m mark for the first time in his career, achieved his best throw in his very first attempt in Paris.

Interestingly, Chopra beat Julian Weber to win in Paris for his first DL title in two years. Weber defeated Chopra to win in Doha and also their previous three meetings.

Next, the Indian javelin thrower will be seen in action in the Ostrava Golden Spike Athletics meeting in the Czech Republic on June 24.

After two events in Europe this month, Chopra will return home to compete in the inaugural edition of the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru. The event will be hosted at the Sree Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bengaluru on July 5. The NC Classic 2025 will be Chopra’s first competition at home in the 2025 season.

Earlier, the Indian javelin thrower skipped the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition in Kochi, which served as the qualification event for the recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, Republic of Korea.
