Neeraj Chopra breached the 90m mark for the first time on May 16, 2025, in Doha.

Neeraj Chopra’s long wait for a 90m throw ended on May 16, 2025, when he breached elusive mark at the Doha Diamond League 2025. Having started his evening with an 88.44m throw and then fouling his next, Chopra lined up for this third attempt with one goal in mind. What followed was a massive throw of the javelin before the two-time Olympic medallist broke into his trademark celebration.

Hands flung in the air, a confidence in his demeanour and the aggressive smile of a champion, Chopra waited as his javelin breached the skyline and finally landed. He had cleared the 90m mark finally. Chopra had entered the elite club of just 25 male javelin throwers to breach the 90m mark.

Still just 27, Chopra seemingly completed sports by achieving the elusive 90m throw, having already been a Olympic champion, world champion as well as Asian champion. In 2021, he became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in track and field events and followed it up with a silver three years later. Sandwiched between those two Olympic medals was a World Athletics Championships gold that he won in 2023.

Chopra has also clinched gold at the Asian Games (2018, 2023), Commonwealth Games (2018) as well as the Junior World Championships (2016). In this article, let us take a look at Neeraj Chopra’s five best throws in his javelin career.

Neeraj Chopra’s career best throws

2025 Doha Diamond League: 90.23m (NR)

Eight years since he burst into the scene and having come within a metre of scaling it on five different occasions and once just six centimeters shy, Neeraj Chopra finally cleared the 90m barrier. It came at the Doha Diamond League 2025 and in his third attempt.

In Doha on May 16, Chopra once again started by drawing close to hitting that mark with a 88.44m opening attempt before smashing the 90m block with a glorious roar as his javelin landed on the green zone and scoreboard flashed 90.23m. He had done it finally. Ironically, it wasn’t enough to hand Chopra a win as fellow competitor Julian Weber of Germany also entered the elite list with an even bigger 91.06m throw to top the podium and push Chopra to second place.

Much like his other four best throws, Chopra had to stay contend with a runner-up finish. But his words after that “this is just the beginning…” is what mattered more.

2022 Stockholm Diamond League: 89.94m

Neeraj Chopra shattered the national record for the second time in a month with his 89.94m effort in the Stockholm Diamond League. Chopra’s throw in June 2022 was just six centimetres shy of the 90m mark, which he is confident of breaching. So far, this is his personal best. Grenadian Anderson Peters took gold with a Meeting Record breaking throw of 90.31m.

2024 Lausanne Diamond League: 89.49m

It was a slow and heartbreaking start for Neeraj Chopra at the Lausanne Diamond League 2024. His first four throws did not breach the 85m mark and finally did it in his fifth throw. But in his final attempt, the two-time Olympic medallist let out his customary roar as the screen indicated a throw of 89.49m. Grenada’s Anderson Peters took the title with a throw of 90.61m.

2024 Paris Olympic Games: 89.45m

In the men’s javelin throw event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, India’s star athlete Neeraj Chopra had a strong performance. Chopra registered his season-best throw of 89.45 meters on his second attempt, launching himself into second place on the leaderboard after the first two rounds.

Chopra started the competition with a foul throw, but he quickly bounced back with a massive effort that fell just short of the coveted 90-meter mark.

2024 Paris Olympic Games: 89.34m

Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra has made a strong start in his bid to defend his Olympic title at the Paris 2024 Games. In the men’s javelin throw qualification round, Chopra easily secured his place in the final with an impressive first throw.

Competing at the Stade de France, Chopra launched the javelin 89.34 meters on his opening attempt. This distance far exceeded the 84-meter mark required for direct qualification to the final.
