Unusual tennis schedule announced for LA Olympics 2028

The men’s and women’s tennis finals at the LA Olympics 2028 have been scheduled to take place on weekdays.

The Los Angeles Olympics 2028 is still three years away, but all sports schedules have been announced. Tennis is one of the most exciting sports, as the world’s best ATP and WTA stars compete against each other to make their country proud.

Paris 2024 saw history being made when 37-year-old Novak Djokovic finally won the Olympic Gold medal, the only milestone which had eluded him until then. The Serbian finished his campaign on a high by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in the gold medal match, where he did not drop a single set on his way to glory.

LA will be hosting the Games for the first time since 1984, when Sweden’s Stefan Edberg and Germany’s Steffi Graf claimed the gold medal in their respective divisions.

Carson Courts, home to the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) High-Performance Training Center and host to numerous professional women’s tennis championships, has officially been chosen as the designated venue for all tennis matches at the 2028 Olympics.

The complex includes Carson Center Court and Courts 1–11, making it a world-class setting for showcasing Olympic tennis.

However, what has caused controversy and disappointment among tennis fans is the unusual scheduling of important matches. Generally, gold medal and bronze medal matches are high-stakes encounters and are held on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games final between Djokovic and Alcaraz took place on Sunday, August 4th, 2024. However, the schedule for the 2028 Games shows that the gold medal match will be played on Thursday, July 27, 2028, for women and on Friday, July 28, 2028, for men.

Interestingly, another medal match is scheduled for the second day (July 20, 2028). While no official details have been confirmed yet, it is expected to be a team event. Many speculate that a format similar to the US Open mixed doubles, featuring top stars teaming up against each other, could be adopted, adding an exciting new dimension to Olympic tennis.

Stay tuned for more updates — this is a developing story.
