Ramita Jindal & Arjun Babuta will be in action in shooting finals.

It was a historic Sunday for India at Paris Olympics 2024 as they opened their medal tally in the Paris Olympics. Manu Bhaker became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in Women’s shooting. It was a tense final with Bhaker in the reckoning for a medal for the most part of the game. With a shot to go, the Indian was in the second position leading by just 0.1.

But her 10.3 in her last shot compared to South Korea’s Yeji Kim’s 10.5 meant that the 22-year-old had to settle for a bronze. Nevertheless, it was a historic medal as it broke the 12-year jinx for India without a shooting medal in the Olympics. India will look to add more medals not only in shooting but also in other events. Ramita Jindal and Arjun Babuta booked their place in the 10m Air Rifle Individual event in their respective categories.

Earlier in the day PV Sindhu and Nikhat Zareen had impressive dominating wins in the opening encounter in Badminton and Boxing respectively. Disappointment prevailed with the experienced folks as Sharath Kamal lost his first-round match.

Deepika Kumari-led archery team was knocked out by the less fancied Netherlands in the quarters. But the youngsters have been brilliant with some of them in-line to win medals for India. Let’s look at the top medal contenders on Monday.

Shooting – Women’s 10m Air Rifle Event – Ramita Jindal

Ramita Jindal will look to start India’s day with a medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Individual event. The double Asian Games medalist advanced to the finals with a strong performance. She was down and looked out at one stage during qualification but showed immense nerves of steel from the second series to book a date with seven other fellow shooters for the Olympic medals.

She will have a huge task in her hands as the line-up is one of the strongest. South Korea’s Hyojin Ban broke the World Record during qualification. The holder of the Previous record, Jeanette Hegg Duestad is also in contention for a medal. But it is all about performing on the big day and Ramita would like to show her composure to win her maiden Olympic medal.

Shooting – Men’s 10m Air Rifle Event – Arjun Babuta

Arjun Babuta, Ramita’s partner in the Mixed Team event of 10m Air Rifle will also be a primary medal contender for India as he will look to upstage seven of his opponents in the Men’s event. He was quick to get off the blocks in the first series as he was in the top three. His love for the perfect 10.9 was visible as he kept going for it.

He finished seventh in qualification with a total of 630.1 points. But he has to do a lot more to have a shot at the medals. His primary competitor will be China’s Lihao Sheng who is the current world record holder. Both have a history of competing against each other as Sheng won Gold while Arjun won Silver in the Asian Shooting Championships last year. Indian would love to get one back and it would be great to do it in the Olympics.

Archery – Men’s Team Event – Tarundeep Rai/Dhiraj Bommadevara/Pravin Ramesh Jadhav

Huge stakes are up for grabs for the Indian Men’s Archery team who have directly qualified for the quarterfinals after finishing third in the qualification. Making his debut in the Olympics, Dhiraj Bommadevara was clinical in his first show at the Olympics, scoring 681. His teammates Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Ramesh Jadhav did enough to get a bye in the pre-quarters.

The trio awaits the winner of Turkey and Colombia in the quarterfinals. Despite being ranked higher, India should not be complacent as any team could win on a given day. The women’s team had a shocker in the quarterfinals with a 12th-seeded Netherlands whitewashed a fourth-seeded team. The Men’s team would like to course-correct it and qualify for the medal round.
