Manu Bhaker will be competing in her final event on day 8 of Paris Olympics 2024.

India salvaged some pride after a disappointing previous day as the athletes notched up impressive performances on Friday on day 7 of Paris Olympics 2024. It was up to Manu Bhaker once again, who was clinical in the women’s 25m Pistol qualification round. Fellow countrywoman, Esha Singh tried hard but couldn’t make it to the last eight.

The Indian hockey team registered an impressive 3-2 win in their final group game against Australia with skipper Harmanpreet Singh scoring a goal in a penalty corner and a penalty stroke. In archery, the Mixed Team of Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat came close to winning an Olympic medal.

In the semifinals, they lost to South Korea 6-2 and in the bronze medal match the scoreline repeated with the USA taking home the medal. In athletics, Ankita Dhyani could not find her best form in the women’s 5000m heat 1 as she finished 20th and only the top eight could qualify for the finals.

India’s medal contenders on Day 8 of Paris Olympics 2024

Shooting – Women’s 25m Pistol – Manu Bhaker (1:00 PM)

It seems to be business usual for Manu Bhaker in Paris Olympics 2024 as she made it to her third final in the week. Competing in the women’s 25m Pistol event, she was on target right from the go. The twin Olympic medalist finished second in the rankings with a score of 590/600. Bhaker will be raring to go and would want to win her third medal in at Paris Olympics 2024 for India.

Her shooting was impressive and she kept improving as the qualification progressed. In the precision round, she scored 294 with only seven shots in the Inner 10s. But in the next round, which is the rapid series and tougher of the two, she scored 296 with 17 hits in the innermost circle. Fans around India would be waiting to welcome her with three Olympic medals from France.

Shooting – Men’s Skeet Individual – Anantjeet Singh Naruka (7:00 PM) **

After a disappointing show in the Trap events, India moved into the other event with a shotgun with Anantjeet Singh Naruka in the men’s skeet event. The Asian Games Silver medalist started well shooting 23/25 in the first round. He dropped slightly in the next round shooting 22 clay targets.

With 23 in the third series, the 26-year-old finished with 68 points, much lower than he would have loved to. He should be aiming to hit all the remaining 50 shots to stand a chance for the finals. He is currently at the 26th position and only top six players will be qualifying for the finals.

Archery – Women’s Singles – Bhajan Kaur & Deepika Kumari (6:03 PM onwards) **

In the women’s individual event, India will have two women archers who will be shooting towards the target in the pre-quarterfinals. Veteran Deepika Kumari will take on Germany’s Michelle Kroppen in the round of 16. It is expected to be a close contest as the Indian who is World No. #12 is up against the World No. #13, who won bronze at Tokyo Olympics in a Team event.

Her match will be followed by Bhajan Kaur’s pre-quarterfinal clash against Inodesia’s Diananda Choirunisa. The 18-year-old has made a mark with her calmness in the Asian Games last year. The youngster from Haryana will now look to progress into medal rounds on Saturday.

Boxing – Men’s 71 kg – Nishant Dev (12:18 AM)

India’s Boxing campaign hasn’t really gone the way and Nishant Dev has an opportunity to rectify it. The Olympic debutant will take on Mexico’s Marco Verde in the contest of the last eight. A win would assure a medal for India. The unseeded Indian showed his capabilities with an eye-popping victory over Ecuador’s Jose Rodriguez who was seventh-seeded.

It was a split 3-2 decision in favor of the Indian. The bout for the final four for Nishant is against the second seed and he should be aware not to drop guard against the Pan American Champion. The youngsters have won medals for India and it would be great is Nishant is added to the list.
