PV Sindhu and Mary Kom began their respective campaigns with victories whereas Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina were beaten in women's doubles in tennis.

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 started on a fiery note on day 3 with events coming thick and fast. While India had collected it’s first medal after Mirabai Chanu delivered a silver on Saturday, the nation failed to reach any final on Day 3 of the Tokyo Olympics.

Indian shooters disappointed once again on Sunday. However, the rowing team of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh turned out to be dark horses in their event. While heavyweights like Mary Kom and PV Sindhu began their campaign with victories, Sania Mirza and the men's hockey team failed to meet the expectations.

A long lineup of Indians were in action on Sunday in Tokyo. Here is a look at how they fared in their respective competitions.

Shooting

India’s disappointing performance in shooting continued. There were no finalists from the Women’s 10m Air Pistol Qualification event. India’s Manu Bhaker and Yashaswhini Singh finished in 12th and 13th place respectively. Only the first eight athletes were to qualify for the finals.

There was more disappointment in store for the Indians. In the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification event, India’s Deepak Kumar and Divyansh Singh failed to make it to the finals. Deepak finished in 26th place with 624.7 points, while Divyansh scored 622.8, finishing at the 32nd position. Only the first eight advanced to the finals.

In the Men’s Skeet Qualification, Angad Bajwa finished at the 11th spot with 73 points. On the other hand, Mairaj Ahmad Khan finished in the 25th place with a score of 71 after Day 1 of qualification. Three sets have been completed and the remaining two will take place on Monday. The top six athletes will qualify for the finals.

Boxing

In the other event, Manish Kaushik bowed out in the round of 32 in the lightweight category against Luke McCormack of Great Britain. Both camps must have been very nervous awaiting the judges’ final decision in what was an evenly contested game. Manish made an aggressive comeback in the second round but McCormack held his own in the third and advanced to the next round.

Badminton

India’s best medal hope in Badminton, PV Sindhu registered an easy win against Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova. The World No. 7 secured the victory by a score of 21-7, 21-10 in a women’s singles Group J match. Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi will be her next opponent in the group. The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist is favourite to qualify into the next round.

Gymnastics

India’s Pranati Nayak finished at the 12th spot in qualification with an overall score of 42.565. Unfortunately, this was not enough to ensure qualification into the next round as only the top 10 go through from 15 that take part in the qualification round.

Rowing

The Indian duo of Arjun Jat and Arvind Singh finished third in the repechage Round 2, thus qualifying for the semi-finals. They are in the running for a potential bronze medal in the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls.

Table Tennis

India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran was eliminated from Men’s Singles bracket after losing against Siu Hang Lam. Hong Kong’s Siu Hang Lam won the contest by a 11-7, 7-11, 4-11, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6 scoreline. World No. 38 Sathiyan had the upper hand but the World No. 95 Hang clawed back into the match, winning the last three games consecutively.

Manika Batra was also in action in Round 2 of the Women’s Singles, playing against Ukraine’s Margaryta Pesotska. The Indian was up against a tough opponent but performed at a high level herself. Batra won the deciding seventh game as the final score read 4-11, 4-11, 11-7, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7 in her favor.

Ukraine’s Liudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok eliminated the pair after defeating them by a score of 0-6, 7-6, 10-8. The Indians could not capitalize on their first set win and capitulated in the tie-breakers late in the second set and the one to decide the winner.

In men's hockey, Australia put up a dominating performance, as India put up a very disappointing display. Dilpreet Singh was the lone Indian scorer as the Aussies put seven goals past India. The defeat means that the road to the quarter finals have become a little rocky for the Indian men's hockey team as they face a tricky Spain in their next match.

Swimming

Indian swimmer Maana Patel failed to qualify for 100m backstroke semifinals. She finished second in the heats, however, missed the mark by 5.2 seconds with a timing of 1:05.24.
