Indian athletes faced defeats in multiple events.
A few more days remain before the end of Tokyo 2020, with teams scurrying to gain the last few medals. On day 12 of the Tokyo Olympics, China, the USA and Japan continued their battle for the top spot – while the other nations also aim to add to their medal tally.
For India, there is still room for hope. After gaining two medals at these Olympics, the country can add more before the end of the Games. The Indian hockey teams have made the country proud in recent days and still stand a chance in gaining medals, while a few remain in the individual events.
Hockey
India’s dreams of a gold or silver medal in the men’s hockey event were ended on day 12 of the Tokyo Olympics. They lost out to a dominant Belgium side, losing 2-5 after conceding way too many penalty corners in a disappointing outing. It was a hat-trick by Alexander Hendrickx (19′, 49′, 53′), and goals by Loick Luyaert (2′) and John-John Dohmen (60′) that helped Belgium book a place in the final. For India, Harmanpreet Singh (7′) and Mandeep Singh (9′) scored the two goals.
The Indian men’s hockey team will now face either Australia or Germany in the bronze medal match and must win that to bag another medal. The match will take place on Thursday, 5 August 2021.
Athletics
For India, the day in Athletics began with the Women’s Javelin Throw qualification round. However, it started in a disappointing fashion. India’s Annu Rani failed to qualify for the finals and only finished in 14th position, with a best throw of 54.04m.
Wrestling
In the Women’s Freestyle 62kg category, India’s Sonam Malik faced off against Mongolia’s Bolortuya Khurelkhuu. She put up a brave fight in the clash and almost got the win. However, despite the scoreline ending on 2-2, the Mongolian wrestler won by virtue of winning more points on a single move.
Athletics
Tajinderpal Singh Toor was one of the medal contenders in the men's shot put event. Hence, a lot of expectations were pinned on him. However, he had a disappointing showing in the Qualifiers Group A on Tokyo Olympics Day 12. In his first attempt he hit a decent 19.99m throw. However, his subsequent two attempts were deemed foul throws. As a result, he finished 13th in the group, thus crashing out of the Tokyo Olympics.
