Tokyo Olympics Day 7 Highlights: Atanu Das stars, Sindhu, Bhaker impress

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have completed the first seven days and the action is picking up pace. Several sports involving the Indian athletes are reaching the business end. Thursday was a positive day for India in respect of plenty of good results in team and individual events.
From Atanu Das causing a major upset to P.V. Sindhu making short work of her opponent to reach the quarters. The contingent is aiming to add to the silver medal brought home by Mirabai Chanu earlier in the multi-sport event.
Here is a look at Indian athletes’ performances in various events on Day 7 of the Summer Games:
Shooting - Women’s 25m Pistol Qualification
India’s Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat participated in the Women’s 25m Pistol Qualification Precision event. They gave a good account of themselves, especially Bhaker, who finished in fifth position (292 points) in the rankings. On the other hand, Sarnobat is struggling in 25th place (287 points). They will continue the second round of qualifiers tomorrow in the Rapid event, looking to secure a top eight finish for a place in the finals.
Archery - Men’s Individual
Indian archery Atanu Das caused a major upset in the Men’s Individual bracket by defeating 2012 London Games gold medalist Oh Jin-Hyek in the 1/16 Elimination Round. Das had to win the tie by a shoot-off to secure a 6-5 set points win. He earlier defeated Deng Yu-Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the previous round by a score of 6-4 set points. Das will contest the pre-quarters on Saturday against Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa.
Sailing - Men’s One Person Dinghy - Laser
Vishnu Saravanan continued his exploits in the Men’s One Person Dinghy - Laser event. He is placed in 23rd position after Races 7 and 8 on Thursday.
Sailing - Men’s Skiff 49er
The Indian pair of Varun Thakkar and Ganapathy Kelapanda are putting in a trailblazing performance in sailing. The duo are in seventh position after Race 5 and 6 on Thursday. They are stamping India’s arrival in the sport of Sailing.
Rowing - Lightweight Men’s Doubles Sculls
The Indian pair of Arvind Singh and Arjun Jat finished fifth out of six participants in Final B of the Men’s lightweight doubles sculls event. They recorded a time of 6:29.66 and finished in 11th place overall.
Badminton - Women’s Singles
P.V.Sindhu reached the quarterfinals after easily defeating Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt in the Round of 16. The World No. 7 won the match by a 21-15, 21-13 scoreline.
She will now face Japan's Akane Yamaguchi in the quarter-finals of the mega event.
Hockey - Men’s Pool A
The Indian Men's Hockey Team delivered a sensational performance by defeating Argentina in their Pool A fixture. Graham Reid’s men recorded their third victory of the group stage with a 3-1 win, thereby giving themselves a strong chance of qualifying into the knockout rounds.
Three wins out of four means they are in second place with nine points, chasing Australia who lead with 12.
Boxing - Men’s Super Heavy Weight
India’s Satish Kumar defeated Jamaica’s Ricardo Brown in the Round of 16 clash. He won by points with the scoreboard reading 4-1 in his favour. The pugilist was dominant in the bout and will look to carry the momentum in the matches to come. He is now just one win away from securing a medal for his country.

Golf
Indian golfers Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane took part in the Men’s Individual Stroke Play event. There are a total of four rounds in the event and play got interrupted during Round 1.
Anirban Lahiri finished his first round with a solid 67 (4-under) with 6 birdies and 2 bogeys. He is at Tied 8th currently and will look to go even lower for the second Round on Friday.
Meanwhile, Udayan Mane is at the 60th place (last) with a 76 (5+over) after round 1.
Boxing - Women's Flyweight (48-51kg) Preliminaries - Round of 16
Mary Kom and Ingrit Valencia put up a bout for the ages. In a close contest, Valencia edged past the six-time world champion Mary Kom. The final score read 3-2. This was also Mary Kom's final bout in the Olympics. The 2012 bronze medal winner just missed the chance of ending her Olympics career on an all-time high.
The Colombian pugilist started the bout on a strong note, winning the first round 4-1. However, Mary Kom came back in the final round by winning 3-2. Despite the victory in the final round, the big margin loss in the opening round proved to be the difference, as the Indian boxing legend bowed out of the Tokyo Olympics.
Swimming - Men's 100m Butterfly Heat 2
Sajan Prakash with a fantastic showing in the men's 100m heats. He finished in 53.45 seconds, just 0.06 seconds behind the topper of his heat. Prakash missed the top 16 mark by 1.71 seconds and bowed out of the Tokyo Olympics.
