India-Pakistan conflict: How sports fraternity reacted in support of Indian Armed Forces

Indian Premier League has been postponed by a week due to the ongoing conflict.
On April 22, a barbaric terror attack in the Pahalgam district of India’s Kashmir claimed the lives of 26 people including a Nepali citizen. The attack was condemned by all, and two weeks later, the Indian Army decided to punish the perpetrators by launching a massive operation called “Operation Sindoor”.
Following a successful joint operation by Indian Armed Forces targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7, 2025, India described the strikes as measured and responsible. In response, Pakistan escalated the situation by launching attacks on civilian areas, including heavy shelling in the Poonch district, which reportedly killed at least 16 innocent people.
The situation along the Line of Control (LoC) and in the border states of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat remains tense, with a near war-like atmosphere prevailing. The ongoing conflict has also impacted the highly celebrated Indian Premier League (IPL), as the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, held on May 8 in Dharamshala, was abruptly called off after 10 overs due to security concerns.
The decision came as no surprise, given that Pathankot—just two hours from Dharamshala was reportedly experiencing heavy cross-border firing.
In these challenging times, it is vital for every citizen to set aside differences and stand united in support of the armed forces, who are courageously risking their lives to safeguard the nation and ensure that India sleeps in peace. Cricketers and other prominent Indian sportspersons joined in expressing their solidarity with the Army, showcasing their patriotism and love for the country.
Reactions from sportspersons
“We stand in solidarity with, and salute our armed forces for fiercely protecting our country in these difficult times. We are forever indebted to our heroes for their unwavering bravery and heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifices they and their families make for our great nation. JAI HIND”, posted Virat Kohli on Instagram.
Several other cricketers also followed suit, including Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma, T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra and more.
