India finish campaign with record medal haul at World Para Athletics Championships 2025

India’s tally of 22 medals is the nation’s best-ever performance in a single edition.
India concluded its campaign at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 on Sunday, with a truly historic and record-breaking performance, marking the nation’s best-ever showing at the event.
The 73-member Indian contingent finished with a total of 22 medals, including 6 gold, 9 silver, and 7 bronze, surpassing the nation’s previous best tally of 17 medals achieved in the last edition in Kobe, Japan.
Hosting the event for the first time, India had named its largest-ever contingent of 73 members, comprising 54 men and 19 women, for the multi-discipline para-athletic event in New Delhi. India started with an aim of breaching the 20-medal mark in the home edition.
As the World Championships hit its home run, not only had India soared past the intended target but accomplished its best-ever medal haul in a single edition of the championships.

Having finished the penultimate day on 18 medals, India added four more, including three silvers, to its kitty on Sunday to go past the 20-medal mark and assure a top-10 finish in the medal tally.
Of those four medals, two came from India’s sprint queens Simran Sharma and Preethi Pal—who clinched their second medals in the 2025 edition.

The visually impaired sprinter Simran Sharma won hearts with her second medal. After winning gold in the women’s 100m T12 with a personal best of 11.95 seconds, she went on to secure a silver in the 200m T12 event on Sunday.
Another shining star, Preethi Pal, who had made waves at the Paris Paralympics 2024 with double medals, once again proved her mettle on the world stage.
Running on home soil, the 24-year-old clinched bronze in the 200m T35 and followed it with a silver in the 100m T35, both season-best performances.
This silver was special as it marked her first World Championship silver medal, adding to her growing collection of three World Championship bronzes and two Paralympic bronzes.
Throughout the campaign, Indian athletes continued to make history and break barriers. Shailesh Kumar won India’s first gold in the men’s high jump T63, setting a new Asian record and etching his name in the record books.
Sumit Antil maintained his dominance in the men’s javelin throw F64, clinching his third World Championships gold and smashing the championship record with 71.37 meters of throw.
Rinku Hooda added to the gold medal rush by winning the men’s javelin throw F46, while Navdeep Singh claimed a silver in the men’s javelin throw F41 event.

The championships also saw incredible stories of courage and resilience. Soman Rana, an army veteran who lost his leg in a mine blast, earned his first world-level medal with a bronze in the men’s shot put F57.
Paris Paralympics gold medalist Parveen Kumar overcame a hip injury to secure bronze in men’s high jump T64.

Speaking of the women athletes, they never forget to shine brightly. Ekta Bhyan delivered a season-best performance to win silver in the women’s club throw F51, while Deepthi Jeevanji claimed silver in the women’s 400m T20.
Together with Preethi Pal and Simran Sharma, these women crafted a beautiful story of inspiration.
India finished the championships in 10th position in the standings. Brazil topped the medal table with 44 medals, including 15 golds, while China finished second with 52 medals, including 13 golds.
