Indian women’s rugby team will participate for the third time at the Asian Games 2026.
Rugby has been a part of the Asian Games since 1998. In the first two editions, both rugby union and sevens were played. From 2006 onwards, only Rugby Sevens are being played. Introduced in 2010, the women’s event has been a permanent fixture at the Asian Games ever since.
The 2026 edition of the Rugby Sevens will be held between 1 and 3 October at Paloma Mizuho Rugby Stadium. In the men’s edition, 12 teams will participate, and eight teams will participate in the women’s event. Seven countries have won a medal in Rugby.
Japan lead the medal tally with 11 medals (four gold, six silver, and a bronze), followed by South Korea with nine medals (four gold, two silver, and three bronze).
From an Indian perspective, only the women’s team will represent the country at the Games. The men’s team was not selected after failing to meet the Sports Ministry’s selection criteria for major multi-sport events.
Drawn in Pool B with China, Malaysia and Hong Kong, India face a tough path to the semi-finals. With defending champions China and a strong Hong Kong side in the group, they will need consistent, top-level performances to stay in contention.
The Indian women’s team will be determined to make the most of the opportunity, especially with rugby continuing to gain popularity and visibility in the country.
