Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, very few would have predicted that Mumbai Indians (MI) would be out of contention from the playoffs with nearly two weeks of action remaining in the competition. Given the quality among their ranks, it has come across as a massive shock that MI find themselves at the ninth position with only four wins out of 12 matches.

After ending their 12-year long streak of losing the first match of the competition, MI have struggled ever since. They lost the services of Rohit Sharma for several matches due to injury, which derailed their top-order. Barring Ryan Rickleton, none of the batters have been consistent for Mumbai Indians.

Their weaker suit, though, has been the bowling unit, with struggles led by ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah. The best bowler in the world has managed to pick a mere 3 wickets in 12 matches. Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar have heavily underperformed, while Mitchell Santner too was ruled out due to injury.

Since then, the five-time champions have reached playoffs just once, and it is only a matter of time before the skipper will have to answer questions raised by management and team owners.

Amidst the on-field failure, Hardik Pandya also finds himself surrounded by controversies related to his personal life. Recently rumours surfaced about Pandya’s second marriage to girlfriend Mahieka Sharma on May 22.

However, these rumours are suspected to be false and misleading, only to invite more criticism for Pandya. ABP Live News has already fact checked this claim, stating that no official confirmation has been provided about the same.

Fans tend to go after cricketers’ personal lives when they seem to struggle on the field, and hence the job of cricketers becomes even tougher, as they have to deal with criticisms, both on and off the field. Pandya’s own returns as a player have compounded to MI’s woes.

He has not hit a half-century since being traded back to MI. This year alone, he averages just above 20 with the bat, and his bowling economy is nearly 12.
