Olympian Dhinidhi Desinghu sets new National Record in women's 100m freestyle

Dhinidhi Desinghu is currently India’s best female swimmer, holding national records in multiple events.

Days after rewriting her own National Record in women’s 200m, Olympian Dhinidhi Desinghu broke the NR in women’s 100m freestyle event at the ongoing Senior National Aquatic Championship 2025 on Wednesday. En route, the 15-year-old swimmer also became the first Indian female swimmer to complete a race in under 57 seconds. She took 56.78 seconds to surpass the previous NR set by Shivangi Sharma.

Shivangi had clocked a time of 57.73 seconds in Guwahati 2022. Dhinidhi also broke the meet record and clinched her second gold medal in the competition.

Dhinidhi, who was India’s youngest Olympian at Paris 2024, earlier broke the national record in women’s 200m freestyle event, clocking 2:02.97 seconds.

Maharashtra’s Rishabh Anupam Das broke the National Record in men’s 200m Backstroke event with a time of 2:00.65 seconds. The previous record was held by Olympian Srihari Nataraj, who took 2:02.29 seconds to complete the race in 2019.

With the Asian Games scheduled to take place next year, Rishabh is on course and will look to improve his timing going into this season.

Benedicton Rohit, who hails from Tamil Nadu, also set a new national record in the men’s 50m butterfly at the Senior National Aquatic Championship 2025. He clocked 24.11 seconds in the final on Wednesday to better his own record of 24.13 seconds set earlier in the day in heats.

Earlier in the competition, Rohit shattered the national record in the men’s 100m butterfly event with a time of 52.57 seconds. He got past the previous record of 53.24 seconds held by Olympian Sajan Prakash, which was set in 2021.
