Indian women have won two straight games
In a day of mixed fortunes for India at the World Team Table Tennis Championships 2024, the women’s team pulled off a commanding 3-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Group 1, while the men’s team suffered a 3-0 defeat to South Korea in Group 3.
The women’s team, spearheaded by star paddler Manika Batra, continued their winning streak from their 3-2 triumph over Hungary, swiftly defeating Uzbekistan. The Central Asian country’s paddlers were left clueless as India clinched a 3-0 win. Batra, currently ranked world No. 36, was the standout performer in the Hungary clash, leading India to a 3-0 victory. She outclassed Markhabo Magdieva in straight sets, 11-7, 11-4, 11-1.
Archana Girish Kamath and Diya Parag also made significant contributions to India’s victory, each securing a 3-0 win over A Rimma Gufranov and Rozalina Khadjiev respectively.
However, the men’s team faced a challenging day on the court, enduring a second consecutive loss at the Championships, falling 0-3 to hosts South Korea. Veteran Sharath Kamal, reigning national champion Harmeet Desai, and G Sathiyan lost their respective singles matches, resulting in a disappointing third group stage tie against the third-seeded Korea.

Harmeet, who is India’s top-ranked player at 67, was defeated by world number 14 Jang Woojin 4-11, 10-12, 8-11. Sathiyan was then outplayed by world number 16 Lim Jonghoon 5-11, 7-11, 7-11, leaving India trailing 0-2. Despite Sharath managing to take the second game, he couldn’t maintain the momentum, losing 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 5-11 to Lee San Su and conceding the tie.
Despite these setbacks, including a 1-3 loss to Poland after an opening win against Chile, India holds the second spot in Group 3 behind Korea. The team remains hopeful and determined to bounce back in the upcoming matches.
