List of all Davis Cup winners by continent
A country from Asia is yet to win the World Cup of men’s tennis.
Davis Cup is an annual international men’s team event in tennis which was introduced in the year 1900 by ITF (International Tennis Federation). The tournament started initially with two countries taking part (the USA and Great Britain) and in 2023, 155 countries participate in the World Cup of tennis.
The United States of America has been the most dominant country winning the Davis Cup 32 times followed by Australasia and Australia – combined (32). The winners of the Davis Cup are crowned as the champions of men’s tennis.
There have been several changes to the structure and format and the year 2019 saw a recent change in the format. Previously three singles along with two doubles matches were contested in a single tie but since 2019, four singles and only one doubles tie are contested. In this article let us discuss the continent that has found major success in the Davis Cup.
List of Davis Cup winners by continent
Continent | Wins |
Europe | 49 |
North America | 33 |
Oceania | 28 |
South America | 01 |
Africa | 01 |
Asia | 00 |
Europe, North America (particularly the USA), and Australia have been the powerhouse in the 20th century winning almost 95 per cent of the titles. The United States of America has won 32 titles (1900-2000) making them the most successful country in the 20th century.
Europe had few strong contenders like France, Sweden, and Great Britain winning the bulk of the titles in the 20th century. Spain rose to the occasion gradually and is now among the top six countries with the most Davis Cup titles. They won their first title in the year 2000.

The USA were the only country to win all the titles from North America with 32 but Canada their neighbours rose to the occasion and were crowned the champions recently in 2022. Oceania stands third with a total of 28 titles with the majority of them won by Australia (22) alone.
The other six titles were won by Australasia (Australia plus the Dominion of New Zealand). Australasia was a strong force to reckon with having won four successive titles in the 1910s. Argentina won their maiden title in 2016 making South America the recent entrant.
Africa does not have a rich history in tennis but South Africa in 1974 broke the barrier by winning the first Davis Cup title. India was scheduled to play the African side in the finals but due to apartheid policies, the Indian team wasn’t given permission to travel.
Unlike the 20th century, the 21st century (in the last 20 years has produced varied winners) across different continents. In particular, Europe has had major success with eight different countries winning titles. Asia remains the only continent which has not won the title yet and with the likes of South Korea, China, and Japan starting to dominate it is not far away for Asian countries to win a title.
