Welcome to the Khel Now’s live blog for the Saketh Myneni/Aslan Karatsev vs Marc-Andrea Huesler/Laslo Djere men’s doubles round 1 match in US Open 2023.
India’s Saketh Myneni and his Russian partner Aslan Karatsev are set to take on Marc-Andrea Huesler and Serbian Laslo Djere in their first-round men’s doubles match at the US Open 2023. Myneni and Karatsev will compete in the doubles draw at the US Open, beginning Wednesday (July 31st), at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, which will be their first appearance as a team.
Their opponents, Laslo Djere and Marc-Andrea Huesler, also made their first appearance in a doubles event. Myneni is making his debut appearance in the doubles event at the US Open, having competed previously in the singles section in 2016. This will also be Saketh Myneni’s fourth Grand Slam appearance this season and is currently ranked 77th in doubles.
Preview
Saketh Myneni after spiltting up with Yuki Bhambri is set to start his campaign with Aslan Karatsev. The Indo-Russian pair were the first alternates before the start of the competition and in the subsequent days got into the main draw. The 35-year-old Indian has enjoyed reasonable success this year by reaching the top 75s and has consistently played at the ATP tours.
His partner Aslan Karatsev on the other hand, will be playing his first doubles match post the first-round exit at the Wimbledon Championships 2023. The Russian has in total played only two doubles matches this season – exiting in the opening rounds of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
About the opponents
Laslo Djere is a former junior World No. 3 who broke into the top 30 when he won his first ATP Tour title in 2019 at Rio de Janeiro without dropping a set. He defeated Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the final. His biggest victory came when he upset current World No. 5 Casper Ruud in 2023 at Auckland.
Marc-Andrea Huesler is the Swiss No. 1 and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 47 in February 2023. He got the better of next-gen ATP players Lorenzo Musetti and Holger Rune in the semifinals and finals, respectively, at the 2022 Sofia Open, winning in straight sets. Huesler has one singles and one doubles title to his name, and the 2023 US Open will be his first with his current doubles partner.
Both Huesler and Djere lost in the opening round at Wimbledon 2023 and since are yet to play a doubles match. The Swiss-Serbian pair have enjoyed reasonable success in the singles department in the previous competitions.
Head-to-head record
The US Open of 2023 will be the first time these two pairs will be meeting each other.
Prediction
As these two teams are playing against each other for the first time, both stand a good chance of emerging victorious. Saketh Myneni’s experience can help the match tilt in the Indo-Russian pair’s favour however that wouldn’t make a massive change to the match either. Thus, on a good day, and with lady luck smiling in their favour, either of these two teams can emerge victorious in their pursuit of the US Open doubles title.
