Welcome to the Khel Now's live blog for the Novak Djokovic vs Ben Shelton match in men's singles semifinals of US Open 2023.

Three-time US Open champion and second seed Novak Djokovic is set to take on home favourite Ben Shelton in the semifinals of the US Open 2023 on Friday. The match is scheduled to be played at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Djokovic reached the semifinals by beating No. 9 ranked US star Taylor Fritz 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. In his journey to the semifinals, Djokovic defeated Alexandre Muller, Bernabe Zapata Miralles, Laslo Djere, Borna Gojo and then Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. Although Djokovic was not at his best, it was still enough for him to get past Fritz in straight sets. Also, Djokovic has dropped just two sets en route to the semi-final.

On the other hand, Shelton won over No. 10-ranked Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. In his journey to the semifinals, he defeated Pedro Cachin, Dominic Thiem, Aslan Karatsev, Tommy Paul and finally Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals.

Preview

Djokovic, who is regarded as one of the all-time greats and also having the edge over the big three in terms of number of grand slams won, is aiming for a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam in New York. In his journey to the US Open 2023, his toughest matchup was against his fellow countryman Laslo Djere, where he fought hard to win in a five-set thriller.

Meanwhile, Shelton made it to his maiden major semi-final after taking out last year’s semifinalist and compatriot Frances Tiafoe in four sets.

Head-to-head record

This will be the first time Djokovic and Shelton will face each other on the main tour. Shelton is a quality player and an emerging talent, but he needs to be at his level best to match up against the best returner of the game.

Prediction

In the quarterfinals, the 36 years old Serbian giant won in straight sets against Fritz. He is playing in New York for the first time since 2021, and has barely looked in trouble throughout the tournament, except his third-round match against his fellow countrymen Laslo Djere.

On the other hand, It’s the best opportunity for the young American to make his name by defeating one of the greats of game.
