Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury have become the first men's doubles pair to 3-peat at the US Open. The World No. 3 American-British pair defeated Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the men's doubles final to lift the US Open 2023 title and, in the process, become the first-ever duo in the open era to clinch the men's doubles trophy at US Open for three consecutive seasons. They had also won the men's doubles title at Flushing Meadows in 2021 and 2022.
The victory over the Indo-Aussie pair also saw Ram-Salisbury extend their 18-game winning streak in New York and also lift their fourth Grand Slam together. For Britain's Salisbury, this was his sixth grand slam title in doubles, putting him one major victory behind Jamie Murray, who had earlier lost in the competition in New York.
This was also the 31-year-old's fourth US Open title — three in men's doubles alongside Rajeev Ram and one mixed doubles title with Desirae Krawczyk in 2021.
Rajeev Ram has also now won six tennis majors — three US Open and one Australian Open title in men's doubles and two mixed doubles titles at Australian Open.
However, they were slow to start in the final as Bopanna and Ebden breezed to the opening set while Ram lost serve in the very first game and Salisbury also had his serve broken. But after Ram and Salisbury, who each had three double faults in the opening game, had trouble with their serving, they appeared to profit from a break in the action early in the second set when authorities decided to shut the shutters deeply on what was forecast to be another hot day in New York City.
They were able to calm down as a result, gather some energy, and break, which justifiably forced a deciding set. Ram served it out for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph after the Anglo-American combination broke again in the third set.
Rohan Bopanna and Ebden narrowly missed out on title in addition to the top spot in the doubles team rankings. For Bopanna, this was his second Grand Slam men's doubles championship match at Flushing Meadows. In the men's doubles US Open final from 13 years prior, the American Bryan brothers defeated the Indian tennis player who then paired with Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi at that time.
At the Indian Wells Open earlier this year, Rohan Bopanna set a record of becoming the oldest tennis player to win an ATP Masters 1000 title in the Open Era. Bopanna, who is yet to win a men's doubles Grand Slam, won the mixed doubles major in the 2017 French Open. He and Sania Mirza made it all the way to the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open earlier this year.
