This is Spaniard’s maiden appearance in the competition.
Carlos Alcaraz, the World No. 2, is debuting at the Nitto ATP Finals 2023. He qualified last year for the competition but later withdrew due to an abdominal injury. Of his two round-robin matches so far, the Spaniard has won and lost a match each. The former world no. 1 will be looking to make up lost ground in the final group stage encounter.
On the other hand, Daniil Medvedev won the Nitto ATP Finals in 2020 and was a finalist in the following edition. He has a cushion of winning winning both the group stage matches and has also become the first men’s singles player to qualify for the semifinals.
Daniil Medvedev vs Carlos Alcaraz preview
Carlos Alcaraz’s fortunes at the year-ending Nitto ATP Finals 2023 has been a mixed bag. He lost the first round-robin match to Alexander Zverev in three sets after winning the first set in a tiebreak, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4. The Spaniard rebounded with a win against Andrey Rublev, 7-5, 6-2, ending the Russian’s hopes of progressing to the semifinals.
The 20-year-old has won six titles this year but has failed to win any title without since Wimbledon Championships. The Spaniard’s form has experienced a dip since losing in the Cincinnati Masters summit clash to Novak Djokovic.
Meanwhile, Medvedev is in red-hot form, having got the better of Andrey Rublev and Alexander Zverev in straight sets to lead the Red Group with two wins from as many matches. The third-seed Russian has won five tour titles to Alcaraz’s six. Like Alcaraz, he has gone without a title win since the ATP Masters event in Rome.
The Russian suffered a setback at the Paris Masters event previously, losing in the opening round to the eventual tournament runner-up, Grigor Dimitrov. Medvedev also reached the finals of the China Open and Vienna Open but failed to lay his hands on the trophy, losing both the titles to Italy’s Jannik Sinner.

It will be a must-win encounter for Alcaraz, as a loss could mean potential elimination from the prestigious event.
