Jannik Sinner registers maiden win over Novak Djokovic at ATP Finals 2023

World No.1 Novak Djokovic lost to home favourite Jannik Sinner in the second group stage encounter at ATP Finals 2023 in Turin, Italy. Sinner recorded his maiden win over the Serbian in the four head-to-head meetings so far. With this loss, Novak Djokovic has one win and loss each whereas Jannik Sinner looks comfortable to progress to the semifinals with an unbeaten streak.
Both Djokovic and Sinner started the proceedings by winning their respective service games without losing a single point. At (5-5), the Italian got into the act by breaking Djokovic’s service and then went onto win the following game thereby winning the set (7-5).
Jannik Sinnner continued to surge forward and won four out of the five games on the trot halting the Serbian’s momentum. Unlike the opening game, none could break service in the second game which ultimately led to a tie-breaker. At (4-5), Sinner committed an unforced error by hitting the ball long helping Djokovic win the set thereby taking the match to the decider.
In the decider, Sinner striked early to break Djokovic’s service at (3-2) and had a two-game cushion. A poor service at (15-40) cost Serbian game. However, Djokovic with experience came back from behind to break Sinner’s serve for the first time in the encounter and the score now was tied on level terms.
From here, Djokovic and Sinner held onto their service games and then took the match to the tie-breaker. The fourth seed experienced a great start by winning four straight points and never allowed the top seed to settle. In the end, the Italian won the tie-breaker (7-2) and remained unbeaten in the group stages.
A total of 34 aces were delivered in the two hours plus battle with Sinner winning 82 service game points to Djokovic’s 73. Apart from this, majority of the stats remained even.
