She lost her top spot post US Open earlier this year.
World No. 2, Iga Swiatek, notched her 65th win of 2023 with a victory over Coco Gauff on Wednesday, becoming the third player in nearly three decades to achieve 65 or more wins in consecutive seasons. Jelena Jankovic accomplished this feat in 2007-2008, preceded by Martina Hingis in the 1999-2000 season. Swiatek now holds a 9-1 lead in head-to-head matches against Gauff, with a 90% success rate.
Swiatek continued her strong performance at the GNP Seguros WTA Cancun Tennis Finals by defeating US Open 2023 champion Coco Gauff 6-0, 7-5 following her come-from-behind victory against Marketa Vondrousova three days earlier, winning 7-6 (3), 6-0. In both matches, Swiatek handed out bagels, winning sets without dropping a game.
The World No. 2 from Poland will face Ons Jabeur in the final round-robin match on Friday, with Jabeur seeking to advance to the semifinals. Swiatek and Jessica Pegula have already secured spots in the knockouts with 2-0 records in the tournament. If Swiatek wins the WTA Finals, she stands a good chance of reclaiming the top spot from Aryna Sabalenka and finishing the year as world number one.
