The Serbian secured 17 top-ten wins this year.
The year 2023 has been a remarkable one for Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic. Celebrating his 20th year on the ATP tour, Djokovic has shattered records and set new personal bests, making this season one of his most successful to date.
At the age of 36, Djokovic shows no signs of slowing down. His debut in 2003 marked the beginning of a career that would see him rise to the top of the tennis world. Two decades later, he continues to dominate the sport, claiming seven titles in 2023 alone. These victories include three Grand Slams, two Masters titles, and the prestigious Nitto ATP Finals 2023.
However, the path to glory wasn’t without its hurdles. Djokovic’s journey in the Davis Cup was cut short in the semifinals against Italy. A win would have paved the way for Serbia’s first Davis Cup victory since 2010.
In this article lets discuss how Novak Djokovic performed in 2023:
World No.1
The year 2023 marked Djokovic’s record 8th year as world no.1, a feat he first achieved in 2011 and repeated in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2020, 2021, and now 2023. This places him ahead of tennis legends like Pete Sampras, Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in terms of year-ending world no.1 finishes. Another milestone that Djokovic conquered in his illustrious tennis career was equaling Steffi Graf’s record for the most weeks as world no. 1 in February this year.
ATP titles – 7
Novak Djokovic reached eight finals in 2023, winning seven of them, including three Grand Slams. The loss at Wimbledon meant he would not be the first man since Rod Laver to claim a calendar slam. Despite a setback at Wimbledon, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic bounced back in spectacular fashion. He claimed the US Open trophy and his 24th Grand Slam title, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final at Flushing Meadows.
This victory not only propelled him ahead in the all-time list of Grand Slam winners but also made him the oldest man to win the US Open trophy.
Wins against top-10 – 17
Djokovic also boasts 17 top-ten wins in the current season, defeating each of the nine other players in the top ten at least once this season. The Serbian wound up his campaign with a winning percentage of 88.9%, the most by any player on the ATP Tour. The world no. 1 also boasts of a 10-3 win-loss against the top five players in 2023.
The three players who scored victories against the Serb are Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon Final, Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal at the Dubai ATP 500 event, and Jannik Sinner in ATP Finals 2023 group stages.
Service game win percentage – 88.4
Another feather in Novak Djokovic’s cap is the astounding service game win percentage of 88.4% in 2023, putting him at second on the list behind Stefanos Tsitsipas. Djokovic has been a consistent performer in this department over the past 52 weeks. He has won 86% of service games played throughout his career. The 36-year-old has won 57% of all points when serving second and 55.5% overall.
Both these statistics are some of the highest among his peers. The Serbian comes out on top when it comes to playing under pressure.
