Carlos Alcaraz, former world no.1, has added another feather to his cap by winning the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for 2023. The award, which is voted by his fellow tennis players on the ATP Tour, recognises his fair play, professionalism and integrity on and off the court.

The Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award is named after the Swedish legend who won six Grand Slam titles and was known for his exemplary conduct and gracious attitude. The award was first presented in 1977 and has been won by some of the greatest players in the sport, such as Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg, Arthur Ashe and Pete Sampras.

Alcaraz, who turned 20 in May, has had a phenomenal season, winning six titles, including his maiden Grand Slam at the Wimbledon Championships. He defeated legendary Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set final thus becoming the youngest Wimbledon champion since Boris Becker in 1985. He also reached the the semifinals of French Open and US Open respectively.

The Spaniard has also impressed everyone with his versatility, power and creativity on the court, as well as his humility and respect for his opponents and the fans. He has earned praise from many of his peers, including Djokovic, who called him “one of the most complete players I have ever seen”.

Carlos Alcaraz also becomes the fourth Spaniard to receive the honour, joining Jose Higueras (1983), Alex Corretja (1996, 1998) and five-time winner Rafael Nadal (2010, 2018-21). Prior to this, he has won two ATP Awards, receiving Newcomer of the Year in 2020 and Most Improved Player in 2022.

The Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award last year was received by Casper Ruud of Norway. Ruud had a breakthrough year in 2022, winning four titles on clay and reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open. He was also praised for his sportsmanship and fair play throughout the season.
