The Serbian won the award for the fifth time.
Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis maestro, has once again etched his name in the annals of sports history. He has been crowned the European Sportsperson of the Year for an unprecedented fifth time by securing 178 points. Djokovic’s 2023 season was nothing short of spectacular. He clinched victory at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open, demonstrating his mastery on all surfaces.
His prowess didn’t stop there as he secured two Masters 1000 titles and triumphed at the year-end ATP Finals. These remarkable achievements propelled Djokovic to finish the year as the world No.1 for a record eighth time. He successfully fended off fierce competition, including the formidable Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Djokovic has secured the prestigious award for the fifth time in the past 13 years. His first victory came after an exceptional year in 2011, and he repeated this feat in 2015, 2018, and 2021. The Serbian has now clinched the European Sportsperson of the Year award five times, matching the record held by Roger Federer for the most wins by any athlete.
As a champion of 24 Grand Slams, Djokovic will carry this triumph into the 2024 season. His first match will be at the United Cup in Perth, where he is set to face off against China’s top player, Zhizhen Zhang.
The European Sportsperson of the Year Award is a prestigious honor, voted for by 27 different international news agencies. Djokovic’s victory in this category underscores the global recognition and respect he commands in the world of sports. He surpassed other notable contenders such as Max Verstappen (Formula One) and Armand Duplantis (athletics), who finished in the second and third place respectively.
