Ruusuvuori reached his career’s only second ATP final earlier this year at the Hong Kong Open.

Two-time Australian Open finalist and third seed Daniil Medvedev will meet Finnish Emil Ruusuviori in the second round of men’s singles at Australian Open 2024. Ruusuvuori was part of the Finnish Davis Cup squad that reached the semifinals of the 2023 Davis Cup against Australia. The semi-final appearance was the first by a Scandinavian country since Sweden in 2007 following a win over champions Canada. Finland beat Canada 2-1 in the quarterfinals.

Ruusuvuori made his first final of 2024 at the Hong Kong Open where he lost to Andrey Rublev in straight sets. The 2024 Hong Kong Open was the Finnish player’s closest brush with victory, as he is yet to win an ATP-level title.

Daniil Medvedev won five titles in the 2023 season, with the highlight being the two Masters titles at Rome and Miami, beating Holger Rune and Jannik Sinner in the respective finals. The Australian Open is the Russian’s first competition of 2024 as he chose to sit out the warm-up events leading up to the first grand slam of the year. Medvedev’s year ended with three straight losses, two to Jannik Sinner (Vienna, Turin) and Grigor Dimitrov at the Paris Masters.

Daniil Medvedev vs Emil Ruusuvuori Preview

Ruusuvuori is in the round of 64 after a four-set victory over American wildcard Patrick Kypson in four sets – 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4). Medvedev faced off against French qualifier Terence Atmane at the Margaret Court Arena. Atmane won the first set against his more experienced counterpart. The Russian won the next two sets and was leading 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0 when Atmane retired after being overcome by cramps.

Daniil Medvedev (World No. 3) and Emil Ruusuvuori (World No. 53) will play in their third face-off in as many years. Ruusuvuori’s first victory against a top-ten player came at Miami against Zverev, a few weeks after beating Gael Monfils in the first round of the 2021 Australian Open. Medvedev brushed off an early defeat to Sebastian Korda and reached the subsequent five finals, winning three at Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai.

Head-to-head records

Matches – 2

Daniil Medvedev – 2

Emil Ruusuvuori – 0

Daniil Medvedev and Emil Ruusuvuori have played each other twice, once in 2022 at Astana (round of 16) and the second time in 2023 at the ATP Masters 1000 Rome (round of 64). On both occasions, the Russian had the measure of Ruusuvuori, besting the Finnish player in straight sets in both encounters.

The fixture at Rome was closer than the scoreline suggested, with very little to differentiate between the pair statistically. Ruusuvuori surrendered one too many breakpoints (10) to the Russian who converted 50% of them.

Prediction

Two-time Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev was tested by French qualifier Terence Atmane. Medvedev ultimately prevailed when Atmane had to throw in the towel with severe cramping that surfaced in the third set. Medvedev showed good form in the first half of 2023, with five titles in all, including his 20th ATP title on the clay courts of Rome.

Late-season fatigue set in for the Russian as he lost his way, losing in the Wimbledon semifinal to Carlos Alcaraz and the US Open final to Novak Djokovic.

World Number 53 Emil Ruusuvuori will be bullish after reaching the Hong Kong Open final two weeks and finishing runner-up. Meanwhile, Medvedev arrived in Melbourne without participating in any warm-up tournaments and could be a little rusty, which Ruusuvuori will be eager to take advantage of.

Result: Daniil Medvedev to win in four sets.
