Hello and welcome to Khel Now’s live blog for the Rohan Bopanna-Matt Ebden vs Bolelli-Vavassori final match at Australian Open 2024. Please wait for the blog to load.
Rohan Bopanna and Matt Ebden are in their second major final as a team after they moved past Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen in the second men’s doubles semi-final of Australian Open 2024 on Thursday. Bopanna-Ebden will debut atop the ATP Doubles Rankings on Monday following the Australian Open’s conclusion. Bopanna, at 43, will become the oldest No. 1 in history.
Seeded second in the season’s maiden Slam, the Indo-Aussie pair defeated their unseeded opponents 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(10-7) in their semi-final clash lasting two hours and two minutes. Bopanna-Ebden broke Machac in the fourth game to bag the first set. Zhizhen and Machac returned the favour by breaking Ebden’s serve in the fourth service game to clinch the second set and draw level.
The decider was settled by a super tie-break, which the Indo-Australian pair duly won and with it moved into their first final of the 2024 season.
Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori are the other finalists and got here by defeating unseeded German pair Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(10-5). The unseeded Italian duo saw off thirteenth-seeded duo Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the second round and also sent home the eight-seeded German team of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in what has been a dream run at the Australian Open 2024.
Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden vs Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori Preview
Bopanna-Ebden will be up against the unseeded Italian pair of Simone Bolelli-Andrea Vavassori. The Bopanna/Ebden pairing encountered two wildcard teams in their first two matches in their march towards the final. Sixth-seeded Argentine duo Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni were the highest seeds the Indo-Australian team had come across all fortnight.
Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori are the second unseeded pair, Bopanna-Ebden will be facing on the trot after their close semi-final match against Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen.
Bopanna has reached the US Open final twice (2013, 2023), but a Grand Slam trophy has proved elusive. Now, before calling time on his career, he will have the best opportunity to tick that box. Saturday’s summit clash is also Ebden and Bopanna’s second straight Grand Slam final after the US Open final in the 2023 season.
