Australian Open 2024: Iga Swiatek vs Danielle Collins preview, head-to-head, prediction, live streaming
Swiatek is just the eighth player to have multiple streaks of 17+ wins this century.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and No. 62 Danielle Collins are set to lock horns at the second round of the Australian Open 2024 on January 18 (Thursday). At Rod Laver Arena, the Pole prevailed against 2020 edition champion Sofia Kenin to advance to the second round. She defeated the former champion in the opening match of the major with a score of 7-6(2) 6-2.
Before controlling the second set, the 22-year-old Pole came back to win the first on a tie-break. On the other hand, Angelique Kerber’s grand slam comeback was ended by the American Collins in a three-set victory during Tuesday’s first-round match. Collins came past the German and three-time major champion with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 at Melbourne Park to confirm the second-round fixture with the top seed.
Iga Swiatek vs Danielle Collins preview
Both players are coming off defeating difficult opponents. In the repeat of the 2020 French Open final, the Pole had to play her best tennis to defeat her opponent, who was ranked 41st. In the second set, Swiatek saved all three break points she faced after winning the first-set tiebreak. She cleared a 15–40 danger in the sixth game after breaking Kenin at 2-2 in the opening service game, which lasted four deuces.
Talking about Collins, she played aggressively in a very tense third set against a not-so-easy opponent, Kerber. To start at 1-0, Kerber held her serve and saved two break points. From then on, the American oozed confidence as she aggressively pursued points and took advantage of Kerber’s appearance of weariness during the exchanges. She dominated Kerber, winning six straight games after an hour and fifty-four minutes to end the fixture in her favour.

Prediction
Danielle Collins participated in a few events leading up to the competition, however she was eliminated early. In the latter part of the previous season, Collins had encouraging indications of her former self, but she is still inconsistent.
Since suffering a defeat at the hands of Veronika Kudermetova in Tokyo on September 28, Swiatek has now won 17 straight matches. This becomes the longest winning run on the Hologic WTA Tour since the Pole’s 37-match winning run in 2022.
World No. 1 Swiatek is well known for her metronomic consistency and is one of the biggest servers and heavy hitters, particularly in the closing stages of major championships.
Swiatek has previously fallen short against the American in the Australian Open 2022 semifinals. However, they have faced off five other times, with the Pole winning three of those meetings. Though she was pushed to three sets in Montreal, she lost just one game in two of them, in Cincinnati and Doha.
The two played each other thrice last year, with the top seeded Swiatek losing just one game in each of those meetings. Although Swiatek clearly has the advantage, both players are classic baseliners who strike the ball forcefully. Looking at the Poland professional’s recent form compared with her opponent and keeping in mind the American has only been able to win one of their six overall encounters, Swiatek is a heavy favourite to go past this one.
Result: Iga Swiatek to win three sets
