Italian reached his first Grand Slam final
Jannik Sinner pulled off a stunning upset over world number one Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2024 on Friday, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4 to reach his first Grand Slam final. The 22-year-old Italian became the youngest men’s singles finalist in Melbourne since Djokovic himself in 2008, and the first from his country ever.
Sinner, who had beaten Djokovic twice in 2023, at the Davis Cup and the ATP Tour Finals, showed no fear or nerves as he dominated the defending champion from the start. He broke Djokovic’s serve four times in the first two sets, which he wrapped up in just over an hour. Djokovic, who had won 10 Australian Open titles and 24 Grand Slams in total, looked out of sorts and frustrated, making uncharacteristic errors and failing to find his rhythm.
The Serb, however, fought back in the third set, saving a match point in a tense tie-break and forcing a fourth set. It seemed like Djokovic might stage another miraculous comeback, as he had done in the past, but Sinner was not deterred. He broke Djokovic again in the fourth game of the fourth set and held his nerve to serve out the match after three hours and 12 minutes.
The defeat of Novak Djokovic was preceded by the elimination of Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, who lost to Alexander Zverev in the last eight. Djokovic, who has dominated in Melbourne, is the top seed in the event, while Sinner is seeded fourth.
