The first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open 2024, will begin on Sunday, January 14, with some thrilling matches lined up for the fans. The tournament, which will be held at Melbourne Park, will see 10-time champion Novak Djokovic aim for his 11th title and 25th major trophy in the fortnight-long event.
Djokovic, who is the defending champion and the world no.1, will face Dino Prizmic of Croatia in the first round. The Serbian star, who has won the Australian Open in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023, will try to extend his dominance in Melbourne.
India’s best-ranked tennis player, Sumit Nagal, has made it to the singles main draw of the Australian Open after a gap of three years. Nagal, who is ranked 122 in the world, defeated Alex Molcan of Slovakia in the final round of the qualifying tournament on Friday.
Nagal, who made his grand slam debut at the Australian Open in 2021, will face a tough challenge in the first round as he takes on Alexander Bublik, the top-ranked player from Kazakhstan and the world no. 31.
In the women’s singles event, Aryna Sabalenka will begin her title defense against Ella Seidel, a young German player. Sabalenka will hope to repeat her success from last year, when she defeated Elena Rybakina in the final. Swiatek, who is the current world no. 1 and a four-time Grand Slam champion, will have a difficult draw as she will face Sofia Kenin.
