Nagal scripted history in the tournament after beating Alexander Bublik.

India’s top-ranked singles tennis player Sumit Nagal had a remarkable run at the Australian Open 2024. Nagal became the first Indian in three years to qualify for the main draw of a Major and also became the first Indian in 35 years to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam.

Nagal, who qualified for the second round of the Australian Open 2024 after winning three matches in the qualifying round, earned a total of A$ 180,000 (Rs 98,70,755) from his Australian Open campaign. The A$ 180,000 prize money is the highest amount Nagal has ever earned in a single tournament.

After not getting a wildcard entry to the Australian Open 2024, Nagal, who started the year ranked no. 141 in the ATP rankings, defeated Geoffrey Blancaneaux, Edward Winter, and Alex Molcan in the qualifying round. This also ensured him a prize money of at least $120,000.

He was guaranteed that amount even if he had lost to Alexander Bublik in the opening round. Then Nagal, the 26-year-old, stunned world No. 31 Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the first round of the main draw, with a score of 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Nagal’s run ended with a four-set loss against Chinese wildcard Juncheng Shang in the second round of the Australian Open 2024 with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 5-7, 4-6. Nagal’s performance at the Australian Open 2024 boosted his ranking to 137th, closer to the top 100, something that almost guarantees a direct entry into the main draw of Grand Slams.

“I am confident and happy with my game. I had a good last year. I came to Australia with confidence and tennis is much easier when you’re confident,” said, Nagal, the No.1-ranked Indian player in men’s singles, who won two Challenger titles and reached two more finals in 2023.

“My annual budget to survive on the ATP Tour is around Rs 1 crore and I have just around Rs 80,000 in my account”, Nagal had said in an interview with PTI in 2023.

Although Nagal couldn’t secure a win against Juncheng Shang in the second round, the A$180,000 prize money remained a significant reward for his efforts. This prize money amount will undoubtedly help him to continue his professional tennis journey.
