Jannik Sinner ended Novak Djokovic unbeaten Journey at Australian Open since 2019
The Australian Open 2024 semi-finals will witness a thrilling clash between 10-time champion and defending champion Novak Djokovic and first-time semi-finalist Jannik Sinner on Friday.
Djokovic overcame Taylor Fritz in four sets to extend his unbeaten run in Melbourne, while Sinner ended Andrey Rublev’s quarter-final curse with a straight-sets win.
Djokovic had a perfect record against Fritz before their quarter-final match, and he maintained it with a 7-6[3] 4-6 6-2 6-3 victory.
Djokovic’s last semi-final defeat in a Grand Slam was at the 2019 French Open by Dominic Thiem, but he will face a tough opponent in Sinner, who has beaten him on hard courts before.
Sinner has not dropped a set in the tournament, and he showed his class and resilience against Rublev, winning 6-4 7-6[5] 6-3 in two hours and 39 minutes.
Sinner saved all eight break points and came back from 5-1 down in the second-set tie-breaker. He also outplayed Rublev at the net and on second serves.
Sinner’s only other Grand Slam semi-final was at Wimbledon last year, where he lost to Djokovic. He is one of the few players to reach the Australian Open semi-finals without losing a set, joining Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Murray.
