Feature-length film will chronicle final days of tennis icon’s career.
Amazon Prime has announced a documentary that captures the final moments of tennis legend Roger Federer’s illustrious career. The film, titled “The Last Serve: A Roger Federer Story,” promises an intimate look into Federer’s decision to retire and will offer viewers an unprecedented glimpse into the life and emotions of one of the greatest athletes of all-time.
The documentary traces back to Federer’s plan to document his retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup, a tournament he co-founded with his agent Tony Godsick. What started as a personal project soon became something much bigger, as filmmaker Joe Sabia, known for his work on Vogue’s “73 Questions” series, recorded footage that touched audiences deeply.
Amazon Prime acquired the rights to the project and hired acclaimed filmmaker Asif Kapadia, who directed the Ayrton Senna documentary “Senna,” to lead the production. The documentary aims to provide a comprehensive view of Federer’s final days on the court, with unprecedented access to his personal life, including interviews with Federer and his wife, who shared their private world.
The film is not only about Federer’s retirement, but also about his legendary rivalries with players like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. The documentary reveals the dynamics of competition and friendship that shaped his career and the sport of tennis.
The documentary is a significant addition to Amazon Prime’s expanding lineup of sports documentaries, which showcases the platform’s commitment to offering compelling content to sports enthusiasts worldwide. By pairing documentary releases with live sporting events, Amazon aims to leverage its diverse sports portfolio to attract viewers and deepen engagement with its audience.
