The excitement has been dampened by withdrawal of five prominent players
The WTA Dubai Tennis Championships 2024, the second WTA 1000 event of 2024, is set to begin this Sunday with a stellar field of players, including World No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka. However, the tournament faces a challenge as five players have withdrawn, altering the competitive dynamics.
The withdrawal of five prominent players comes as a surprise and a disappointment to both fans and organizers, who were looking forward to a clash of titans at the WTA Dubai Tennis Championships. The revised lineup of participants leaves room for new contenders and unexpected outcomes.
Despite the setback, the WTA Dubai Tennis Championships still promises to deliver exciting and high-quality tennis. With emerging talent and intriguing narratives on display, tennis fans are eager to witness the drama unfold on the courts of Dubai.
List of Players who announced their withdrawal from WTA Dubai Tennis Championships 2024
Naomi Osaka
The former world No. 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion, Naomi Osaka recently made a comeback at the Doha tournament, where she reached the quarterfinals. However, she has decided to skip the Dubai Open, presumably to rest and prepare for the upcoming Indian Wells and Miami tournaments in March.
Angelique Kerber
The three-time Grand Slam champion, Angelique Kerber returned to the circuit this season after taking a break for maternity leave. However, she has chosen to miss the entire Middle East swing, opting out of both Doha and Dubai.
Barbora Krejcikova
The 2021 French Open champion is also missing from the Dubai lineup. She suffered a back injury that forced her to withdraw from the Doha tournament and has extended her recovery period, ruling herself out of the Dubai title race.
Karolina Muchova
The 2020 French Open runner-up has pulled out of the event due to a nagging wrist injury that kept her out of the Australian Open. Unfortunately, this injury has not healed yet, preventing her from competing in Dubai.
Jessica Pegula
The reigning Montreal Masters champion completes the list of withdrawals. Pegula, the American No. 2, has announced her decision to skip the entire Middle East swing due to a neck injury, thus missing both Doha and Dubai.
