Djokovic seeks a historic sixth title at the Sunshine State.
The Indian Wells Open 2024, officially the BNP Paribas Open, is set to commence on March 6th and conclude on March 17th in Indian Wells, California. This prestigious tournament, contested on outdoor hard courts, marks the 50th edition for the men’s category and the 35th for the women’s.
Serving as the inaugural event of the “Sunshine Double,” the BNP Paribas Open precedes the Miami Open and is a highlight of the early spring hard court circuit in the United States.
Regarded as the “fifth Grand Slam” due to its significance, the 2024 BNP Paribas Open will assemble the elite of the ATP and WTA tours. The top 32 seeded players will receive byes in the first round, with their competition beginning in the second round on Friday.
After a five-year hiatus, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is poised to return to the Indian Wells Masters. Djokovic, who shares the record for the most men’s singles titles at the BNP Paribas Open (5) with Roger Federer, has been absent from the last three editions due to his decision against receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Additionally, the 2020 tournament was canceled owing to the pandemic.
In the women’s category, Martina Navratilova, Mary Joe Fernández, Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Daniela Hantuchová, Maria Sharapova, and Victoria Azarenka each hold the record for the most singles titles, with two apiece.
Defending their titles in the singles competition are Carlos Alcaraz for the men and Elena Rybakina for the women. In the doubles category, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, as well as Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková, return as the reigning champions.
