Alex de Minaur vs Ben Shelton prediction, betting tips & odds, head-to-head, preview: Canadian Open 2025

Shelton recorded his 100th career win with the victory over Flavio Cobolli.
Ben Shelton was in no mood to put off his 100th career win when he took on Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round of the Canadian Masters 2025. For a while, it looked as if that might be the case when the American was trailing 3-5 in the decider.
The result was decided by the thinnest of margins in what was an off day for both players. Shelton recorded 46 unforced errors, while Cobolli was not far off with 44. The Italian struck 31 winners to Shelton’s 26, while recording 8 aces to 12 by the American.
Shelton is now 2-2 against Cobolli after defeating the Italian 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(1) in two hours and 24 minutes. The win sends Shelton into the quarter-finals of the ATP 1000 event for the first time on debut. It also nudges him one step closer to becoming the first American since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win the Canadian Open.
Alex de Minaur will take on Shelton in the last eight after he battled Frances Tiafoe in a three-setter on Centre Court to go 3-1 against the Maryland native. The Australian quelled the mid-match surge by Tiafoe with a rock-solid defence to win 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and advance to the last eight in Toronto.
The Australian is on track to record his 50th tour-level win this season after he prevented an all-American quarter-final between Shelton and Tiafoe. The seventh seed, Tiafoe, gave away free points to De Minaur with 49 unforced errors, which overshadowed his 29 winners and 10 aces.

Preview
Shelton and fellow American Taylor Fritz are potential semi-final rivals in Canada. But not if Alex De Minaur has anything to say about it. The Australian will look to prevent another potential reunion between two Americans after he defeated Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round.
Andrey Rublev, the 2024 finalist, could also ruin the party when he takes on Fritz in his quarter-final.
As the Aussie inches closer to his second straight title of the season and 11th overall, Shelton will have similar thoughts. Only, in the American’s case, he will be angling to improve on his appearance in the Munich Open final into his maiden ATP 1000 triumph.
Apart from it being the 22-year-old Shelton’s first time in Toronto, it’s just his fourth appearance in an ATP 1000 quarter-final.
De Minaur, a 26-year-old Sydneysider, reached the finals in Toronto in 2023. A win over Shelton will place him ahead of his American rival in the ATP Rankings and closer to his all-time high of No. 6.

Match prediction
Alex de Minaur is on a roll, especially with a victory at the recently concluded Washington Open behind him. Ben Shelton is not to be discounted after rising to a career-high ranking of No. 7 following his semi-final run in Washington.
The 22-year-old Shelton will turn to his booming serves, which are his forte and strong forehand. As Alex de Minaur has proven, his excellent court coverage and ability to defend often come in handy. His ability to grind out his opponent was on full display against Frances Tiafoe.
De Minaur saw a significant rise in his rankings to re-enter the ATP top 10 after winning the Washington Open for the first time. The Australian’s 25-6 record on hard courts this season is a statistic that should worry Shelton.
A tight three-set thriller is on the cards, with De Minaur edging out Shelton to reach the last four.
Result: Alex de Minaur to win in three sets.
