Alexander Zverev vs Francisco Cerundolo prediction, betting tips & odds, head-to-head, preview: Madrid Open 2025

Zverev earned his 25th win in Madrid in a lively three-setter on Sunday.
Alexander Zverev and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina gave the local crowd their money’s worth during their third-round afternoon session match at the Manolo Santana Stadium. Zverev eliminated Fokina, the last surviving Spaniard in the men’s singles draw, over three sets and two closely fought tiebreaks to prevail 2-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(0).
Zverev survived their two-hour, 45-minute encounter, extending his lead over Fokina to 5-1 on a day when both players were not at their best. The Spaniard recorded 32 winners but also made 45 unforced errors. The German accumulated 11 aces, and all the double faults in the match (6) came from his racket.
Zverev’s hard-fought win in the Spanish capital was his 25th from 30 matches in the men’s singles draw. Only Roger Federer, 26 from 30 games, has more wins at the venue than the German.
Francisco Cerundolo is all that remains of a seven-man starting lineup of Argentinians in the Madrid Open men’s singles draw. The 26-year-old Cerundolo earned a 96-minute, 6-4, 6-4 to one-up his countryman Francisco Comesana and advance to the fourth round on Sunday.

Preview
Zverev, now on a seven-match winning streak on clay, continues his march towards the title after a closely fought win over Fokina. Despite the withdrawal of pre-tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz, the first-round exit by three-time champion Novak Djokovic, and the loss of defending champion Andrey Rublev in three sets to Alexander Bublik, the event remains open as plenty of potential contenders remain in the fray.
Taylor Fritz, Jack Draper, and Jakub Mensik are among the challengers to Zverev. Should seedings hold, Zverev is on track to take on third seed Taylor Fritz in the last four and, before that, Mensik in the last eight.
On Tuesday, Zverev must find a way to get past No. 20 seed Francisco Cerundolo. The German is yet to beat Cerundolo at a tour-level event, with a 2-0 record after falling to the Argentine in Buenos Aires earlier this year.

Match Prediction
Zverev, backed by a superior record on clay courts relative to Cerundolo, will fancy his chances against the Argentine when they square off in the fourth round. Cerundolo has in his corner a 2-0 win-loss record against the top seed, with both wins taking place on clay, which translates into a greater psychological edge.

While Zverev is one of the better servers on tour, he faces Francisco Cerundolo, who is known for keeping the ball in play for a place in the last eight.
Not to be forgotten are German’s two titles in Madrid. Yet, Zverev exposed his brittle side in the third round against Fokina. Despite his title run in Munich, the World No. 2 trails Cerundolo on clay court wins in 2025, with Cerundolo leading with 12 wins to Zverev’s eight.
On paper, there isn’t much difference between the two players, but Cerundolo’s mental toughness will help him emerge as the winner.
Result: Cerundolo will win in three sets.
